Agreed to an extent. But if I were him I'd sign for two more years on the hawks in the 3.5 range. Winning more cups would be nice.

Bonuses may get taxed more, but in the (inevitable) event of a lockout, ROR will get most of his money.

Not even a little bit. Money earned is money taxed, whether he earns it as a bonus or as salary has exactly zero influence on what he pays in taxes.

Escrow savings makes more sense.

I believe if he would have residency in a state with a lower income tax rate(or none at all) then the taxes he pays on the bonus would be paid at that rate instead of the high New York tax rate.
