Love golf but you're not wrong.

I've had a long standing argument with a friend of mine about sports like golf, horse racing, Nascar, etc... not being actual sports and more of an activity. But even then, at least it's the actual person swinging the club or driving the car. It gets much worse when it's someone playing a game of that. And I get that I'm certainly not the target demo for eSports.

My 6 year old watches hours of youtube videos of people opening toys and unwrapping eggs with toys inside them and then playing with them. I don't see the appeal, yet everyone of my friends with kids around that age all see their children doing the same stuff. It's so weird.

Hate those toy videos!

Let me jump in on this videogame talk.

I used to play a ton of games. Obviously as I've gotten older, my free time to play has dwindled, but I still manage to get a fair amount in.

I've personally never gotten into the eSports stuff ala Overwatch, League of Legends, etc., because while OW is fun, I just find it incredibly boring to watch others play. League is dumb as hell, and frankly Fortnite bores me to play, can't imagine watching it.

However, watching pro fighting game players is absolutely a treat. I love fighting games, I grew up owning kids in Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat on the arcade cabinets, but watching what some of these people do in Street Fighter especially, is just insane, and really fun to watch.

Personally, I don't see the allure of watching games like Overwatch, Call of Duty, etc. Too much going on.

I don't get watching other people playing games.Maybe it's because I'm old and always found it annoying watching others play games in the arcade while you waited your turn.

I used to play collectible card games at the competitive level. I traveled the country to play in regional tournaments.

I have no attention span or interest in such things anymore, but I still have friends who compete and they live stream the matches on steam.

Not much different than watching poker on TV.

It’s all the same. It’s competition. My students are obsessed with Fortnite. Rather than tell them what a waste of time it is, I ask them about it in order to gain some insight and empathy into their lives.

Whatever floats your boat I suppose.

What was the kid in the Wizard playing for?

How did he know about the warp whistle?

in a nutshell:

Corey(Fred Savage) wanted to run away and he broke his brother out of a mental home. Once he found out Jimmy was good at games he had Jimmy playing games along the way to help pay for them running away to start a new life in Callliiiforrrniaaaa. Then they discovered the video Armageddon contest because they scammed Haley (Jenny Lewis) so they all decided to go for it.

As for the warp whistle..yeah that's still a mystery

Fun discussion. Bit of a chicken/egg debate as there is no definitive answer other than the fact that these hobbies/athletic pursuits have evolved into competitive events in which people are willing to pay for. Add to that the argument made earlier that 99.9% of people can't consistently do/lack the talent to do something is what makes an athlete can also apply to the "activities" listed above. I really enjoy playing golf (14 handicap) but all it does for me is really illustrate how much talent the ones that do it professionally have.

Speaking of golf, whether it is a sport/activity/diversion/good walk spoiled, it is one of a very few competitive ventures in which the playing field is closest to being level (same course, distance yet conditions/mental approach can vary) and the compensation is directly related to the results. Miss a 6 footer on 15, can potentially make you to lose $56,789. Constant pressure to perform and "taking a day off" has an immediate negative financial impact.

How much more entertaining would professional team sports be if you adopted the same performance based, results driven model. For example, NHL revenues sit at 8 billion and players get 50%. 4 billion/1271 (games played in a season) = $3,147,000 on average up for grabs each game. I don't know, 66.6% for the winners, 33.3% for the losers. Could add hundreds of wrinkles and permutations on how the revenue would be split but sure changes the dynamics to how each game would be approached.

Man, I have waaay too much free time on my hands. Should probably take up video gaming or some other hobby.

Hoping for more traction on the job search this week.

I have until November to land something which I wasn’t expecting but now I feel like I can truly evaluate opportunities.

It took a few passes but I finally feel like my resume truly represents my job history and skill set.

Try 50 vs 50 on Fortnite. The game goes from mostly stealth and waiting to way more action and strategy. I usually don’t play multiplayer games but this one has me hooked, partly because it’s fun and partly because there’s nothing else interesting to play on the Switch.

Biggest reason I haven't bought one.

It's the same old song and dance with Nintendo. Aamzing first party titles (Mario, Zelda, etc) and a total lack of anything worthwhile from third party developers. They've gotten more this go around, but it's re-releases of games that have already been out for years.

It's a shame because the tech on the Switch is really cool, and it works well, but I'm not spending $300 on a machine to play Mario.

As for Fortnite, meh. Just not my type of game. I love MP stuff, but there's just something about it that I can't get into.

They get me every time without Zelda and it’s mostly nostalgia from playing Ocarina of Time as a kid. I still enjoy the new ones though, it’s still my favorite series. This last one was good and I probably put more time into it than any other Zelda but it was lacking the dungeons and bosses of previous games.

As for the Switch itself I love the hardware. I haven’t owned a handheld system since the Gameboy Color. I don’t take it out but it’s still pretty convenient. There’s a part of me that wishes I just got a PS4 though. I’ve never had a PlayStation so I’m missing out on that whole library. Maybe when the price drops, I’m not in a hurry.

I also thought that with the Switch combining handheld and console they’d pump out more 1st party games but they fooled me again.
