This will only be a good signing if he exceeds the 70 point plateau. Kinda bummer that that we are paying him more than rivals are paying much better players though. We will know if this is a good deal by year 3.

true don't think they gonna trade willy now. Nylander has good relationship with his team mates and never asked for a trade; if he at least performs his contract (which he will, i think he may out perform few years); there is no urgency in trading him

i guess brown is gone after the season and that money is spent on Gardiner with some AHLers coming as replacements. Marner/Matthews contracts are gonna be done; tricky ones are gonna be Johnsson/Kapanen

We actually don't know what his relationship is with his team mates right now and trading him can potentially fill a club weakness while providing cap relief at the same time. If they win a Cup of course, all bets are off, but failing to win gives them the perfect opportunity to excuse to rejig their team and he is a logical asset to consider as the starting point. You aren't getting a ready to rock cost controlled top 4 D man for Kappy or Johnsson and both those players also represent new chances for team friendly signings. We'll see how his year plays out but Dubas may well get the last laugh here.

7.5 a year average is not a win. He is making almost a million more then Pasta let that sink in.

Worst analysis I have ever read on HFBoards.
MLSE is also paying Babcock $6M a year ... and it does not matter. MLSE has a billion dollars in the bank.

CAP is the ONLY thing that matters, and CAP hit is $6.9M for 6 years.

It's CAP hit that matters.
It's CAP hit that matters.
It's CAP hit that matters.

Your logic is nonsensical. Its about how much Nylander is paid compared to market value. People that wanted to see it become a game of cat and mouse (strong-arm Willy into settling for less) never got the bigger picture.
We lost the negotiations.

Lmao dudes he signed for a good deal at 6.9 aav. We’re one of the richest organization in the league the opinion about oh he makes more $$ is irrelevant lmfao

Also unless he totally craps the bed the cap will continue to go up with Seattle coming into the league. Aka more cap room = higher salaries

Take simple economics arm chair gms
What does us being rich have to do with this at all. The cap is the same for us and the poor teams.

Next year we lose a key player because of the cap.

You don’t sign a player to 6 years with the intent on trading him.

I get a few folks on here turned up their dislike of the guy due to the length of the negotiations. But odds are hes a Leaf for the duration
Why not? Not that I'm sure they'll trade him or keep him for the entire contract. But 6 years has nothing to do with whether they trade him or not.

Now Nylander has to earn it.

Bottom line...

Nylander can no longer score just 20 goals a season while earning that kind of scratch. I won't be happy unless he gets 30 goals and 40 assists per year. 70 points are the minimum.

Are we going to be using Pastrnak's contract as a comparable for Marner's also?

Can't wait to see everyone justifying Marner is worth 3M+ more than Pastrnak.

Why would we use Pastrnak as a comparable to Marner?

We will use someone who is much more comparable to Marner, than Pastrnak.

No matter your take on the deal, we should all be pulling for Nylander to succeed, because it increases trade value, it increases contract value, it increases our cup aspirations, its win, win, win.

They're paying him a cap of 10.2 this year and lost out on potential CAP savings by loading up on bonuses

That contract looks super tradable on July 2nd 2019 after a huge bonus is paid out. That makes the average salary over the final 5 years less than $5M per year!

What he's actually making doesn't matter. His cap hit does.
His cap hit is $200k higher than Pastrnak - let that sink in. We all used the Pastrnak contract as the comparable, and his AAV is LITERALLY the Pastrnak deal + inflation.
It's a good deal.

Cap hit wise, you are correct it is a good deal.

Total dollar wise (what it would've been prior to the season beginning), it is not ($7.45M/yr). This may not matter against the cap, but does carry a few negatives:

1. All negotiations with future comparable RFA's (read: Marner) will have the total dollar value being used as a comparable. This is not good, since this will serve to inflate their prices.

2. The Leafs cannot afford to play chicken with Matthews and Marner this coming year because:
a) The prorated cap hit in year one will be too expensive to afford if holdouts are taken too far (unless Gardiner and Brown go bye bye)
b) Some team will be able to justify giving up 4 middling 1sts for Matthews. After all, we're dealing with a borderline generational talent at a premium position that is just turning 22 prior to next season and one that will be in the Richard and Selke conversation for years to come.

Makes Draisaitl's deal look good by comparison. Marner will probably be 9m x 6 years now and we'll have to trade Kapanen and not sign Gardiner. Next year will be rough on defence so we might as well go for it this year.
