Poile has now signed Arvidsson, Filip Forsberg, Roman Josi, Mattias Ekholm and Ryan Ellis for at least the next 3 years (and all but Ellis for the next 5 years) for a combined $20.5mil cap hit.

Let that sink in a minute.

The Bolts have that cap hit (albeit not that term) locked in for Callahan, Killorn, Girardi, Sustr, Coburn and Kunitz.

If Ardvark stays in the upper 50s-60s points this is a steal. If he regresses and stays in the 40-lower 50s this is still pretty good. If he falls off the face of this earth obviously it'd be bad

24 year old forward with 1 good regular season who playoffs production took a dip gets a 7 year contract like this hmm... Would be a steal of a deal if he proves he wasn't a 1 hit wonder. If he isn't able to produce like a legit top 6 forward again the contract won't be good. Odds are the deal will be at worst fair.

Could look really good if this is his new baseline. Doesn't look like his numbers were a product of out of control luck or anything - oiSH% of ~9, shooting percentage of 12.6% are potentially sustainable.

Still - always feels risky throwing out a 7 year contract for a guy with one good year.

Poile works an angle well:

1) Josi: Just coming off a 2 concussion season - 7 year contract undermarket.

2) Arviddson: Overager, coming off a huge year - 7 year contract undermarket.

3) Ekholm: several years in the dog house, has a good year as a 2nd pairing defenseman - multiyear deal signed, undermarket.

4) Ellis: Several years bouncing on 2nd/3rd pairing, has a good year - multi year deal signed, undermarket.

These deals can blow up, but in the above 4 players, super high work ethic and caliber of players. 3 of the 4 have worked out splendidly so far. Hopefully the same will happen for VA.

I could probably but Forsberg on the list because 6 million was low at the time and seems low now.

I don't get the love for this contract. He's had one good season and had 3 goals in the playoffs.. 7 years is a big risk. It will be a steal if he is consistently a 25-30 goal 50-60P player.

He's was a top 15 shot producer last year and should continue to produce shots in that range, if not improve.

This is a very good deal.

Arvidsson has had one of the highest shot attempt rates dating back to his time in the AHL.

He shoots the puck A LOT, and obviously has the talent to put it in the back of the net.

I would not be worried about this guy at all, those within the hockey community have raved about Arvidsson's ability to produce shot attempts at a very high quantity.

According to everyone here at HF, every RFA contract is a steal. Not saying this one isn't, but y'all are a broken record who constantly over estimate contracts...

This. He had a huge jump in production from 16 points last year to 61 points this year. If he maintains the 50-60 point pace and remains healthy, this is a steal of a contract. Arvidsson knows that, which is why he took 4.25 over 7 years ( he'll be 31 and still in his prime if all goes well) instead of 4.5 on a 1 year deal. There is no way a player with two seasons of such production would have gotten less than 6 million on a 7 year deal. Leverage is everything in the cap era, Marc Bergevin should take notes ( PK Subban, Galchenyuk, Price, etc) lol.
