Pretty good sim. Noticed some huge (unlikely) fallers in the 2nd round, though.

Reduced the "positional needs" slider by ~25%. Traded picks 50 + 118 to Carolina for 69 + 84 + 115. Came out with this:

The simulation structure is very well done, but like you said, I don't agree with their board rankings at all. However I don't agree with most people's board rankings, so unless they had an option for you to create your own, I likely would have been unsatisfied either way.

I like Valade as a 6th or 7th round guy. Not sure I would take him higher than that. He seems like he has a good set of skills and even plays a pretty good, consistent game. Must have some bad luck when it comes to production.

McDonnell is the guy I am trying to figure out. He is not huge, but he's not small. He had good production for an OHL rookie. I just can't find much outside of highlights for him, and the highlights don't tell me enough.

Looked like a good north/south winger who went to the dirty areas and could finish plays.

That team will be interesting to watch next season with Meireles, Hawel, Yantis and potentially Damiani leaving. Thats like 130 goals being removed from your roster.

Guys like McDonnell, Pinelli, Valade, Petizian, Serpa will be given larger roles.

Andrew Leblanc who they drafted #17 could suprise.

The one guy who I wasnt that impressed with was Vukojevic (NJ drafted #82 overall). Good offensive skill but a trainwreck defensively.

He used to be top 5 but I think now he is more top 10-15. I doubt he makes it past 15, because unless a team is absolutely stacked in net, he is simply the best available option by far once you hit ~15.

The thing that really hurts him is that his draft position depends on who needs a goalie. If none of the teams in the top 10 need a goalie (which they really don't), then he is not going in the top 10... Especially since there are a lot of other really talented guys in the top 10.

Right now, Chicago is the only team who really looks like they need a goalie prospect of his caliber in their system, and I can see them taking him top 10. After that, maybe Winnipeg, Calgary or Columbus would take him if they are picking in the top 15, but there really are not a ton of teams that desperately need a goalie.

I don't think there are really doubts about Askarov's ability to make it to the NHL. He does not have too many red flags, is very refined for his age, and has the upside. It is just as simple as many of these bottom feeder teams already having one or more higher end goalie prospects and having various other needs that need to be filled. Considering the depth at the top of the draft, Askarov is not the clear BPA either. If he drops, it will almost certainly be because teams at the top did not need a goalie, and not because he wasn't one of, if not the best, player at the pick.

For those who were interested in drafting Dmitri Sheshin as an OA out of Magnitogorsk's MHL team, he was just traded to Traktor Chelyabinsk and, in a translation from Russian, his now former GM effectively stated that while he was a top scorer for their MHL team, at some point his progression has stagnated and he had trouble keeping up with the speed and decision making required to play in the KHL. That should be a major red flag for anyone who decided to have him their radar.

He decided to move on from Sheshin, 2019 3rd round pick Pavel Dorofeyev and two other mediocre defensive prospects in favour of Danila Yurov, who at this point is expected projected to be a higher draft pick in the 2022 NHL draft as a late 03', and Bogdan Krokhalev, who is 2021 eligible (but not expected to be anything special at this point) in order to acquire Nikolai Prokhorkin's rights from St. Petersburg (it looks like he is heading back to the KHL once again).

Well Prokhorkin is a really good player in the KHL (PPG season in 2018-2019), so they had to give up something good for him. They also gave up Vladislav Kamenev's KHL rights in the trade. I don't think he said anything negative about Dorofeyev outside of not having many opportunities to move off of the 4th line and that he would rather start building with 03's and 04's in their youth system than older prospects who would either be in depth roles or on their VHL teams at best. So I guess they have quite a few good 03's and 04's coming up that they would rather give the MHL ice time to than some of the young guys they've traded in the past few weeks, and then they have other guys who are capable of filling out their VHL squad and depth roles.

Metallurg has moved pretty much every high end older prospect this year in order to acquire top end veteran talent. Yegor Spiridonov (2019 4th round pick) was moved in a separate deal a few weeks ago. Metallurg is a pretty good team, so much like the powerhouses like CSKA, St. Petersburg and Yaroslavl, ice time is tough to come by for younger players.

Sheshin has not been on my draft board at all this year. He was maybe worth a late rounder last year, but dominating the MHL is not impressive without the International stats to back it up, and he simply did not do enough internationally to warrant a pick over many other guys that either went later on or went undrafted. I can see why they would rather have 03's and 04's start to take over than giving guys like him their ice time, especially since a guy like Yurov could have been snatched in the CHL draft and defected if he felt like he was not getting enough opportunities at home.

Let me know if there are any names that I should be looking at. I have spent almost a year chosing prospects and slimming down this board so I feel pretty good about what I've got, but perhaps some people have some insights on an unknown or fringy player that may alter some things for me. Also, my late round targets list is incomplete. I will be adding more prospects to that list.

Well if they are on my list they should be considered (although I did make a few changes and dropped a guy or two off of my list altogether and maybe promoted/demoted some guys).

It's going to be tough to read the USA Development program. It was not overly talented this year, especially when you look at last year's historic class. I won't say it sucks, because you can see that the majority of the team is still on my list, but team is tough to judge...

Bordeleau is the most talented offensive player and has top 6 upside, but he seems very boom-bust, will probably move to the wing, and will likely not be able to play in a bottom 6. Very similar to many other prospects in his projected range.
Berard has less offensive upside but I think he still has top 6 upside and a better chance of being able to stick in a bottom 6 role as well.
Then you get into Tuch and Smilanic who have 2nd line upside but are probably just going to be good 3rd line players instead...
Then you get into Peterson, Slaggert, and maybe Yoder (although he seems mostly like a defensive 4C upside kind of guy, but I added him as a late round option since he did produce almost as much as Slaggert and Peterson).

Sokolov may be a little bit more refined in certain areas, but I think they have the same kind of strengths, weaknesses and upside. Skating will hold both of them back, and neither are overly physical (although they both use their bodies effectively nonetheless), but both have great shots, ample IQ and solid hands for big players.

He will almost certainly get drafted by someone. I can't believe all teams would let him go entirely. It's not that deep of a draft.

When it comes to where, that is another question. I'd say a top 100 pick is an absolute reach in this draft. There are quite a few solid 3rd and 4th round talents at more important positions and do not have the type of skating issues he has. Probably 100-125 as well, but I can see a team taking him in there if they really like him (personally not the Leafs though). I think he starts getting on the Leafs' radar if he is still there at our 5th round pick, but that's probably the best I see the Leafs going with him.

If Askarov makes it to Carolina's pick I would love to see us trade Freddy for the pick, select Askarov, and then sign Holtby for 3-4 years in FA.

Similarities to Murray include coming off a rough year (will help with contract), has consistently faced higher than average high danger shots against/ low danger shots against ratio, along with putting up good numbers when adjusted for SA/60. Also has a cup ring.

Winnipeg, Chicago, Nashville and Calgary could all use a high end goalie prospect like him in their system and unless they really do well in the playoffs or we lose the play-in, will end up ahead of our pick. The only thing that keeps him from being a top 10 pick in this draft is the fact that not many teams in the top 10 need a goalie (at least more than the other positions they can get).

Apparently Tanner Dickinson's added about 16lbs since returning home amidst the shutdown.

Seems to be the prototypical Dubas pick from the Soo. There was concern that he might struggle getting up to size but his progress is proving otherwise.

Well the concern was also with his underlying numbers. He struggled to score and put up production and he was unable to adapt as a center all that well.

He kind of just fell into the entire fray of Soo forwards. A bunch of quality tools that never really culminated into a very dangerous product, which is pretty much the opposite of Kerins and Pytlik; simple but very effective games that played up in key roles.

So it will be a nice test to see how Dubas and Co. view him. Do they look at his package, where he is fast, good IQ, nice offensive skill set with quality defensive ability but needs to improve his strength and shot (and hopefully be able to take on more center responsibilities). Or do they look at his underlying numbers where he shouldn't even be on any draft radars.

Personally, I find the majority of guys can't really excuse those underlying numbers. He had enough talent around him to do better, but it was also not like NHL talent where he would struggle to get ice time if he earned it. And most certainly he should have been lower on the Central Scouting list... I'd say he goes undrafted, gets a camp invite, and perhaps can change people's minds next year if he puts things together. However the same things were said about Constantinou, MacKay and Carroll and none of them look like draft candidates this year.
