that was an awesome finish. To play 13 minutes without a goalie and outscore the other team 3 to 1 is pretty insane.
I didnt realize that, but it still seems to favor big schools because the bigger schools are in a better position to effect schedule, and given RPI is a massive factor in that rankings schedule.......well, you can see how that could play out.
Yet HockeyEast, perhaps the toughest in hockey doesnt get an automatic bid - how does that make any sense?
UMASS-Lowell makes the final of HockeyEast, and sits at home because they're the 17th ranked team in a 16 team tournament, and 38 ranked RIT advances. Ridiculous.
Vermont took 2 of 3 from Boston College in the playoffs, has about the same record, and is only ranked .0100 behind BC in RPI, but BC makes it ranked 11th versus UVM at 20th. Seems too dramatic a difference IMO.
Well, Providence has won the championship for the first time.
Anyway, I heard they are going to demolish the old Meadowlands Arena. I think this is a perfect opportunity for Rutgers to launch a Division I ice hockey program in the Big Ten. Once the old Meadowlands Arena is gone, Rutgers could buy or at least lease the land on which it sat to build a more intimate arena which could host a Rutgers ice hockey team.
That's a good distance away from their campuses.
Just doesn't make any sense in my opinion. If they really wanted to, they could probably come up with something on campus.
HAHAHAHHAHAHH please....NCHC.....and it's not even close
Arizona State is joining DI hockey next season. They play 21 of 23 DI games on the road, but they will host the US U-18 team for a pair of games in late February. Already told my friend in Tempe that I'm inviting myself over for that.
WCHA should add them eventually, they currently only have one actual D1 school (Bowling Green).
Other than Rutgers, the next new D1 programs should be all the FBS schools in California. Recent championships by the Kings are proving that hockey is a hot commodity in the state. To save some money, the seven schools could all use existing arenas for their home games:
California: Oracle Arena (hasn't had hockey tenant since loss of Golden Seals)
Stanford: Cow Palace
UCLA: The Forum
USC: LA Memorial Sports Arena
Fresno State: Save Mart Center (no hockey since Falcons folded)
San Diego State: Valley View Casino Center (would have to work out schedule with San Diego Gulls)
San Jose State: HP Pavilion (would have to work out schedule with Sharks and Barracuda)
This coming weekend I'll be going up with my parents to see Merrimack-UNH and UMass-BU
I'm mainly going to keep an eye out for Seney (Merrimack), Kelleher (UNH), and McAvoy (BU), but will definitely include some others. I'm really excited. Too bad BC was so good this year otherwise I could have gotten a chance to see the main group of prospects play live.
shame kelleher is so small, hockeydb has him at 5'6"! if he grew tree trunk legs like st louis, he might have a shot at the NHL. i mean he still could, and he was excellent at prospect camp, but it's gonna be haaaaard for him

Ahti Oksanen (undrafted, NYR camp invite). The Rangers have an interesting player here. He's a big guy, listed as 6'3" 215, so he lunks his way around the ice. Very good skater. His offensive game is very imminent. He's not going to light up the scoreboard, but I can see him potting 20 goals in a season at the NHL level if he continues to develop. That being said I don't know if he had a good night tonight. He took a bad roughing penalty at the beginning of the game by giving a player on UMass an extra shove in a scrum. Then on the way to the box he must have mouthed off to the ref (I was a couple rows back so I think that's what happened) and ended up getting a 10-minute misconduct. He's good with the puck and real good along the boards too. I think he'll start in the AHL next year and then maybe work his way up to the NHL depending on who signs him.
Danny O'Regan (undrafted) also had a great game. 2G 2A and he was just wherever he needed to be on the ice...never looked out of place. It will be interesting to see where he ends up next year.
Oksanen - Fun fact, he actually started his hockey career as a defensemen. I was still doing stats for BU his freshman year, and I remember being surprised the following year when I heard he was shifting to a forward
Danny O'Regan - sadly sharks property
Oops, lazy move on my part
so this article was just posted about NCAA free agents

think we'll dip into there? vecchione seems intriguing, and we've invited saracino (won w providence last year) to our camp in the past (2012-13). at worst, they could be fodder for the AHL if we end up promoting some guys/letting some UFAs in the minors go
