I didnt realize that, but it still seems to favor big schools because the bigger schools are in a better position to effect schedule, and given RPI is a massive factor in that rankings schedule.......well, you can see how that could play out.

Yet HockeyEast, perhaps the toughest in hockey doesnt get an automatic bid - how does that make any sense?

UMASS-Lowell makes the final of HockeyEast, and sits at home because they're the 17th ranked team in a 16 team tournament, and 38 ranked RIT advances. Ridiculous.

Vermont took 2 of 3 from Boston College in the playoffs, has about the same record, and is only ranked .0100 behind BC in RPI, but BC makes it ranked 11th versus UVM at 20th. Seems too dramatic a difference IMO.

HAHAHAHHAHAHH please....NCHC.....and it's not even close

Well, Providence has won the championship for the first time.

Anyway, I heard they are going to demolish the old Meadowlands Arena. I think this is a perfect opportunity for Rutgers to launch a Division I ice hockey program in the Big Ten. Once the old Meadowlands Arena is gone, Rutgers could buy or at least lease the land on which it sat to build a more intimate arena which could host a Rutgers ice hockey team.

That's a good distance away from their campuses.

Just doesn't make any sense in my opinion. If they really wanted to, they could probably come up with something on campus.

Arizona State is joining DI hockey next season. They play 21 of 23 DI games on the road, but they will host the US U-18 team for a pair of games in late February. Already told my friend in Tempe that I'm inviting myself over for that.

fun fact - nick saracino of the providence friars, who had 5 points (1g, 4a) in 4 games of the friars' championship run, as well as 38 points (14g, 24a) in 40 reg season games attended the devils' rookie camp in 2013 and 2014. he's a LW and he seems solid, esp considering hockey east is tough as it is. wonder if he comes to us.

WCHA should add them eventually, they currently only have one actual D1 school (Bowling Green).

Other than Rutgers, the next new D1 programs should be all the FBS schools in California. Recent championships by the Kings are proving that hockey is a hot commodity in the state. To save some money, the seven schools could all use existing arenas for their home games:

California: Oracle Arena (hasn't had hockey tenant since loss of Golden Seals)
Stanford: Cow Palace
UCLA: The Forum
USC: LA Memorial Sports Arena
Fresno State: Save Mart Center (no hockey since Falcons folded)
San Diego State: Valley View Casino Center (would have to work out schedule with San Diego Gulls)
San Jose State: HP Pavilion (would have to work out schedule with Sharks and Barracuda)

Been lying to myself that I'd be the catalyst to start D1 hockey at the University of Nevada, Reno should I ever win the powerball.

But, it'd be cool if Sacramento State stepped up, too.

This coming weekend I'll be going up with my parents to see Merrimack-UNH and UMass-BU

I'm mainly going to keep an eye out for Seney (Merrimack), Kelleher (UNH), and McAvoy (BU), but will definitely include some others. I'm really excited. Too bad BC was so good this year otherwise I could have gotten a chance to see the main group of prospects play live.

shame kelleher is so small, hockeydb has him at 5'6"! if he grew tree trunk legs like st louis, he might have a shot at the NHL. i mean he still could, and he was excellent at prospect camp, but it's gonna be haaaaard for him

I would like to sign him to a AHL deal and see what he does in Albany.

Lorito is showing promise so far.

Let us know your thoughts! Really curious to what you think of McAvoy. I'm a huge fan of his and wouldn't mind if we drafted him this year at all(obviously not with our first where it is though).

Posting this here because we just got into Boston after watching the women's Hockey East Tournament semi-final game earlier today at Merrimack between BC and UConn.

In general, I hope women's hockey gains traction and some popularity because there were some unbelievably talented players out there. There's no point in comparing the women and men because they are vastly different types of games.

The UConn goalie (Elaine Chuli) was awfully impressive...BC had over 40 shots on goal and she only let in 4. In numbers perspective it's solid, but her play was much better than the numbers indicate. The other UConn players that impressed me were #3 Theresa Knutson - she had a really good and accurate wrist shot that sent the water bottle flying for her goal today, #14 Justine Fredette who scored a beauty of a goal, and #19 Margaret Zimmer who played a very good overall game.

BC ladies are the best team in the country. Their team is really deep and full of talented players at all positions. They can skate like the wind. The ones that stood out most to me from BC were #5 Alex Carpenter - incredible all-around forward setting up plays and finishing them too 1G 1A and a post hit, #22 Haley Skarupa was extremely nifty with the puck and skated really well, #17 Meghan Grieves who was skating like the wind and ripped home a really nice shot in transition from the face-off circle, and #4 Megan Keller, who was out on the ice a whole lot tonight. Every time I looked, she was there patrolling the blue line. Very versatile and great shutdown defender that has an excellent slapshot..doesn't hurt that she's the tallest on the team either.

Northeastern and BU are playing in the Women's Hockey East semi-final right now...and the championship tomorrow.

Tonight will be the men's game between UMass Amherst and Boston U. I'll post another update later.

Okay so I have a lot of thoughts about what I just saw with Boston U. beating UMass 5-4 so I'm going to just lay them out.

Charlie McAvoy is really impressive. I counted his shifts in the 2nd and 3rd periods and he got 11 shifts in the 2nd (1 PP, 3 SH, 7 ES) and 10 shifts in the 3rd (all ES), so he was out on the ice a whole lot. He was also playing on the top pairing too so he wasn't just farting around. Very aggressive player whether he has the puck or not. He likes to pinch in a lot and skates with the puck around the zone a whole lot too. He's just all over the ice and there's a reason why he got credit for 3 assists tonight. He was remarkable. Defensively he impressed me as well...smart stick work and great gap control..plus he throws the weight around. He had two really solid hits tonight (He's 6'1" 211 lbs so he's a solid, solid kid). I liked his vision, passing crispness, and his skating ability. What he needs to work on most is working on "taming his aggressiveness", mainly knowing when to pinch and when not to, as well as a little bit more awareness in his own zone on the opponents' rush. He should definitely get drafted in the first round this year, and I don't think he'll need more than one more year at BU before he gets into the NHL. Loads of potential here.

Other players I kept an eye on tonight were:

From BU:

Jakob Forsbacka-Karlsson (2015 2nd round pick by BOS). He's a pretty smooth player. He scored 2 goals tonight...not nice goals more so goalmount scrambles, but he looked good besides that. He's a really chippy player too, starting a lot of scrums too. I like that, he'll fit in well on the Bruins. An effective, intelligent, intense player with a good pass. He needs a bit more refinement to his game in my opinion, but I like the choice there. Plays top-line center, and a very intriguing prospect. Named the 2nd star of the game.

Jordan Greenway (2015 2nd round pick by MIN). This guy is huge: listed as 6'5" 230 lbs. He's a bully out there and pushes his way around the ice. Solid along the boards and was actually able to make a really nice one-handed assist along the boards to a BU player charging the net. He has pretty good vision, but needs to improve his defensive awareness. A failure to clear the puck on his part lead to a UMass goal. Playing top-line RW he's getting chances. I just don't see the offense there for a top-6 player at the NHL level, but we'll see. Worst off, he'll be a massive body in your bottom-6. A good selection by Minnesota. Needs to work on not taking stupid penalties, especially out of frustration. Flattened a couple people too, but really needs to work on the rest of his game and not just be a big body on the wing.

Ahti Oksanen (undrafted, NYR camp invite). The Rangers have an interesting player here. He's a big guy, listed as 6'3" 215, so he lunks his way around the ice. Very good skater. His offensive game is very imminent. He's not going to light up the scoreboard, but I can see him potting 20 goals in a season at the NHL level if he continues to develop. That being said I don't know if he had a good night tonight. He took a bad roughing penalty at the beginning of the game by giving a player on UMass an extra shove in a scrum. Then on the way to the box he must have mouthed off to the ref (I was a couple rows back so I think that's what happened) and ended up getting a 10-minute misconduct. He's good with the puck and real good along the boards too. I think he'll start in the AHL next year and then maybe work his way up to the NHL depending on who signs him.

Danny O'Regan (2012 5th round pick, SJS) also had a great game. 2G 2A and he was just wherever he needed to be on the ice...never looked out of place. It will be interesting to see where he ends up next year.

Two freshmen (besides McAvoy) really impressed me: Ryan Cloonan and Bobo Carpenter. They didn't register any points tonight but both were skating real well and made some great chances.

From UMass:

Shane Walsh had a great game. He scored a goal and created a bunch of good chances.

UMass also has a bunch of interesting freshmen too:
Austin Plevy (C), Ivan Chukarov (RD), and Callum Fryer (RD) are all going to be very interesting to follow as the years progress.

On a side note, holy hell is Agganis arena nice. BU really has a top notch program, and one of these years I'd love to go visit BC for a game to see how it compares. My oh my was it nice.

Oksanen - Fun fact, he actually started his hockey career as a defensemen. I was still doing stats for BU his freshman year, and I remember being surprised the following year when I heard he was shifting to a forward

Danny O'Regan - sadly sharks property :(

so this article was just posted about NCAA free agents

http://www.hockeysfuture.com/articles/135465/lyon-nelson-tanev-lead-seasons-ncaa-free-agent-group/

think we'll dip into there? vecchione seems intriguing, and we've invited saracino (won w providence last year) to our camp in the past (2012-13). at worst, they could be fodder for the AHL if we end up promoting some guys/letting some UFAs in the minors go

Not sure we will unless they are C or RW prospects.

We've got a lot of kids in the minors right now -- Kujawinski, Lorito, Coleman, Pietila, Thomson, Black -- and guys that might be there next year -- Blandisi, Quenneville, Chatham, Baddock. Yes, I'm not ruling out the idea that Blandisi gets more development time next year.

Not that it'll hurt, but I feel like that's a lot of youth and they might decide to offset that with some veterans.

Nice call, we just signed the third player on that list; Nick Lappin from Brown.
