You know, Dubas could have drafted Braden Schneider, remember? And many here wanted him, myself included...but pfft, Dubas knows better because we needed another small winger.

6'2", 202 lbs, right shot...but I guess he's got too much testosterone for Dubas.

Wait until we see Mac Hollowell against NHL forwards. I believe he's a good skater and has good defending technique but he will get overpowered constantly. He's not a 5'9" like Mete who has strong legs and a decent build. He's a light player with a slight build. And unfortunately doesn't have elite speed/mobility to compensate for his size.
It's the same thing with Robertson, Malgin, Kerfoot, goes on and on. They may be talented, they may be agile, but when the playoffs start and you have to go into the corner to fight for the puck against a mutant dman you have zero chance.

Dubas has shown that the skill game is the hill he'll die on. Right now the players have not rewarded him with anything but regular season success. This roster, as constructed, cannot and will not make a deep run. I'd love nothing more than to be proven wrong...

This is a huge loss. I hope he sticks around the team dring his recovery, his presence has value.

You can't just replace such proud players who sacrifice every game. His first couple of seasons here he was a vital breath of fresh air. His penalty killing abiltities alone make Muzzin dificult to replace.

That said, Dubas signed Bogosian and traded for Lybushkin and Muzzin had been far less physical the last couple of years, converting to a more shutdown, PK specialist With cap space available, he can find a suitor for sure. By the deadline, Leafs just need to be in playoff contention and there will be players available.

His loss has already been baked into the early season performance, but does cap the ceiling of this season's team if they can't find a replacement.

Traded Sean durzi (1.8 mil caphit next year to, 8 pts in 16 gp as a defenceman this year), grundsteom (7 pts in 16 gp) and a 1st for muzzin….

And they got multiple season of him playing as a top pairing quality guy for the team. Just because the other team ends up with something of value doesn't make it a bad trade

Amirov was the best prospect at that spot by a fair margin. Not his fault (or anyone on the Leafs) that he got a brain tumour

Amirov was never consensus best player left in that spot. There were a number of viable skilled and defensive options in the 12-20 range and all would have been acceptable, including Amirov himself. We always have a gaping hole in the organization at the big workhorse defenseman role simply because it's usually not a priority.

Justin Holl or Braden Schneider for less? The Leafs did not need another skilled small winger, but Dubas likes his small wingers. Look at Sandin? Skilled at d right, but is he better than Schneider at defense? Leafs could sure use a defenseman like Schneider.

Weird. I thought this thread was about Muzzin's unfortunate injury, not massively overrating a defensive prospect that's struggling in the NHL, and comparing him unfairly to a guy whose career was sidetracked by cancer.

Dubas thinks he can get physical dmen off the waiver wire, why would you draft them? 😆😂

Brodie?
Season might be over
No. Pretty sure it's the same as Tavares had earlier in the season. An oblique injury. He'll be reevaluated in a couple weeks. Most likely plays in about 3 weeks again I'd guess.

As for Muzzin... he's done until at least end of February and possibly the season if not longer.

Devon towes style works because he's not 5 foot 9 170. Which is why his height is important

Chychrun is 100% a top pair D man on our roster and his contract is the best value deal in the league which also adds trade value. He's making 4.6 for 3 more years.

I'm sure Jack isn't in the league "for work life balance". He's basically pimping hockey tactical books on Twitter

Chychrun was really really really bad last year. At one point in last seasons first 1/4 he was trending historically bad.

Injured this year

And everyone is racing out to give 2 1sts+...no thanks.
HARD pass.

Nary a thread or a bumped thread regarding the loss of Brodie. Very bizarre. He's a huge loss.

Keefe is going to be tempted big time to lean heavily on Giordano and quickly burn down that flickering candle. These defense injuries may be a bigger blow than the goalie injuries.

I am not sure about his injury status as that has a huge impact on hockey performance .. but his skills are off da charts solid to be an NHL #1 D and he has a long history of always being da best D guy on da ice in most games played at RHD throughout his hockey life even back in da Florida days

I really hope that we give the kids a chance to step up.
Rielly-Liljegren
Sandin-Holl
Gio-Hollowell

Balance the load between the top 4, Gio takes the pk spot from Sandin, see if Hollowell can tilt the ice in a sheltered role

The small winger he drafted was 6' tall.

The Dubas philosphy is draft skill.
Especially in the 1st round, and I agree. Or else you end up drafting Luke Schenn. A $1 million/year player.

Could the NYR replace Schneider's play with Schenn this season?

Luke is playing 17:26 a night, 21 blocks and 73 hits +7 with 7 points. $850K/year

Schneider is playing 14:56 a night, 25 blocks and 23 hits +2 with 2 points. Schneider player 11 mins a night for NYR in the playoffs last year.

My point being the physical defenseman is nice but easily replaceable. The talented winger with real skill is a tougher find.

Wanted us to draft Guhle or trade back and grab Schnieder.

One of our best D went down and people are talking about a replacement we could have drafted... It's perfectly relevant to the topic. Do you just get that triggered over any perceived criticism of Dubas?
