Overrated - Carey Price - He's a great goaltender, one of if not the best in the world today. I'm not disputing that.

Yet, the ball-washing he gets from the hockey world these days (Fans, media, employees, players, etc.) is completely over the top.

Underrated - Ryan O'Reilly - He may not be the fastest guy, but he's a super-intelligent , elite-level hockey player, can do it all. Why in the world Colorado drove this guy out of town is beyond me.

agreed 100%

He was very underrated for a long time. He was PPG for 3 years with Bozak and everyone laughed at him for being useless. Guy still does not get his due to this day.

Hardly underrated for such a one dimensional player. He is fast for one trip up the ice!!!

You realize that Bergeron has 2 70 point seasons from a decade ago, Toews has 1 over 5 years ago and Kesler has that are both over 5 years ago, right? Kopitar would fit you're description much better than any of the 3 you mentioned

Pittsburgh won last year based off elite goal scoring

you are underestimating Pittsburghs good team defence. Their Dmen on a whole are not great but team D was great. Crosby is the best player and does what the great two way centres do plus scores (which is what makes him the best). the post is correct though that shut down D beats elites scoring. That's why teams with Bergeron, Toews , Kopitar and Crosby win cups

Around HF Boards the most overrated player currently is Patrick Laine. Without a shadow of a doubt. The guy is a great player, but he's more Corey Perry than he is Alex Ovechkin(why people take being compared to an MVP/Rocket Winner as an insult I will never understand).

Around the league I think it's either OEL or Toews as most overrated. This time last year it was definitely Toews, but I think people have started accepting that he's a great player who was propped up a bit by fantastic teammates/linemates. Again, this is not me saying Toews is a bad player, this is me saying he's great, but not a legend or a top 5 player like people would argue in the past.

OEL is creeping up on him though. This is not a top 10 Dman at all. Not even close really. There are at least 15 Dmen I'd take before OEL. Again, this is not me saying he's a bad player, it's me saying he's not a godsend like he has been made out to be in the past.

Earlier you posted that Laine will score 35-40 goals in his prime. So, I'll take you up on that. I say he scores 35 this year. Avatar bet? Loser has to wear an avatar chosen by the winner from the end of this regular season to the start of the regular season in 2017-18. The only condition is that Laine plays at least 80 games.

So, want to stand behind your words?

Why do people keep saying Toews is overrated when "Toews is overrated" is the single most said phrase on HfBoards

There's that overrating of "2-way players" to the level of a superstar talent again.

On here, I'd say

Overrated : Slavin & Rakell
Underrated : Victor Rask & Alex Steen (not that people say he's bad.. just that no one talks about him)

I'd be curious to understand your reasoning. I'd bet 50% of HF doesn't even know who he is. And of the 50% that has heard of him, my guess is most see him as an "ok" middle pairing guy because his scoring isn't top notch. In fact, in one of the threads a fan said he's only a shoot-out specialist.

I have no problem if you think he's over-rated on HF, just want to understand your reasoning for it.

Hardly underrated for such a one dimensional player. He is fast for one trip up the ice!!!

He led the Stanley cup champs in scoring. Doesn't that show you how important he can be? There are gritty "Two-Way" players you'd name above him who have no cups and much worse playoff stats.

At this point, Toews is underrated

Because of what you're seeing on this board. Read the media. Not a single criticism of Toews and he is seen as a top superstar still. The "Overrated" stuff here is due to backlash from the love he gets from the media.

Any player that plays in Toronto.

Underrated I agree.
We always see this same *yawn* post. Guys in Toronto get criticized so much they get underrated.

Can you honestly tell me Kessel and Phaneuf are getting even 10% of the crap they use to when they were on the Leafs? And please don't tell me it was all Leaf fans. Kessel was the #1 whipping boy on here from 2009-15.

Underated throughout his career. Jason Spezza.
Most overrated, Drew Doughty.

Very overated..Carey Price.

He is in the top echelon of goalies if not the best but its not by a wide margin. He's not god and i. The playoffs he is pedestrian.

Steve Hartnell. All of the powerforwards are falling of the face of the earth and this graceful skater keeps plugging away.

I think Kesler and Spezza are two of the most underrated players of the past 5 years or so.

Ladies and gentlemen,

I have been roaming these boards for a very long time without ever signing up.

But this thread got me to sign up to bring to light a player that I feel has been very underrated all his career.

now keep in mind I am a habs fan , so you can feel free to dismiss this post as blind favoritism.

But there is one player probably not mentioned once in the 9 pages of threads so far. Which has consistently throughout his career made top 10 in points as a defensemen in the national hockey league.

A guy whom several players owe their salaries to , the one and only , Andrei Markov.

This guy was never impressive to begin with , settled slowly into the league , but has consistently put up 50 + points and has some of the best vision and amazing passes in the league. Although his old age is catching up with him , he keeps being used 20 minutes + because skating was never his forte to begin with.

Subpar defensemen have managed to shine on the powerplay throughout the years on his right side:

-Sheldon Souray
-Mike Komisarek
-Marc-Andre Bergeron
-James Wiesnewski
-Mark Streit (hes actually legit but managed 62pts next to him)
-Matthew Schneider

Point is :

underrated : Andrei MArkov
