Wait

This sample size is too small, but a run of a few practices isn't???
You need to see in practice if Brown can play 3rw. Sometimes 30 year old players with a career high 9 points break out into top 9 f's.

if you said Torts wanted to see Kiefer with Bee and Frost, at least there is a logic. Brown what is the point? Other than sabotage of Frost and Bee?

I'd pay him less than Frost. Production is pretty important, and production isn't good.

For reference, Laughton's cap hit is 3 million.
Laughton signed that when he was a bottom 6 utility player. Cates is a top 6 player in his first full NHL season and a coaching favorite, for good reason.

Agree to disagree.

Laughton still is a 3rd line utility player. Always has been. He's still outproducing Cates who is getting way more favorable usage.

Paying just for being a coach's favorite is bad management.

A Flyers masterclass in how to overpay a player drastically. Play him above his ability, then pay him like that's what he actually is.

Laughton signed that contract on April 12th, 2021.

In the previous 87 games he had scored 20 goals and 24 assists (all at ES), was +20, and averaged 15:01 in ice time per game. He was averaging 13:04 at ES, which was 6th highest among Flyer forwards behind only Coots, G, Jake, Hayes and TK.

Laughton is also averaging more ES TOI this season than Cates is.

Cates isn't a top six forward, neither is Frost at this time.
Hopefully they'll develop into those roles.

Frost has to be more consistent, he'll have stretches where he'll score, but scorers go hot and cold, the good ones bring it every night and don't go MIA for long stretches - even when they're not scoring, they're making things happen. Look at TK this season. Frost has a tendency to get passive and wait for opportunities to come to him instead of driving play.

Cates is not a 2C, he may be a 2LW, he's similar to Laughton in that regard, except he's a smarter defensive center, but doesn't have the playmaking skills to drive a top 6 line - though you might team him with someone like Brink. As a LW he'll need to get stronger b/c he'll spend more time along the boards fighting for pucks, but he has great hands in a crowd. But his future is similar to Laughton as a jack of all trades who contributes in various roles, C, LW, PK, PP2.

Now that's humility in action.

He absolutely is not a 2LW. He's not a top 6 player at this time, except on a badly run team. If the Flyers had any kind of real depth this year then Laughton is on the 3rd line and Cates on the 4th.

You have to actually be able to produce points, you know. Contrary to what everyone running the Flyers believes, you win by scoring.

Laughton's contract also bought entirely UFA years. Cates couldn't hit UFA until I believe 2026.

The comp doesn't work on really any level.

Cates getting way more favorable usage? Huhh?? He's the most responsible forward on the team who goes against the other teams best lines and constantly covers others asses. Torts even spelled it out saying if he didn't have to be so responsible defensively to cover for the rest of the team he'd probably have more points.

Hell he set up atleast one if not two high danger chances last night that JVR couldn't finish.

Is he given top 6 minutes, sure. Has he perform like a top 6 player, no. Those are different things.
I really don't know what games ya'll watch.

Top forwards on the team this year in order:
Konecny
Cates/Tippett - tied for me and clear top 6 players.
Laughton
Frost/Hayes - tied for me
The rest have been so meh that there's no point in ranking them.

He's playing with a shitload of offensive talent and he isn't producing.

There's just no reason to pay him 3 million a year.
