I agree. Tough decisions to make with some of the older guys pretty soon. Someone like Petry could net an incredible return and it looks like Fleury or Brook could fill that spot in the near future. Danault is still young but he could be flipped for that crucial LD upgrade that we need while giving Poehling and KK a chance. You need a balance of caution and risk. No caution leaves you gutted, as you said. However, no risk leaves you stranded in the middle of nowhere.
Imagine our top prospects reach their potential. Great news! Except that likely means the Habs have a few good/very-good players, but no elite talent. Forget having superstars like Tampa or Colorado, we won't even have a critical mass of top-end talent like St. Louis has and Boston had. Even if Suzuki, Poehling, Fleury and Brook become as good as we hope, we still can't compete with the top-tier teams. By the time Caufield is ready to break out, Price and Petry will be past their prime and Weber close to retiring. So what the hell are we doing?
Either build today's team or build tomorrow's team. That requires risk, because you'll have to sacrifice one to gain the other.
If rebuilding, I think you have to look at the room and keep the guys that keep everything in check. Consider moving the others
