You need a balance of caution and risk. No caution leaves you gutted, as you said. However, no risk leaves you stranded in the middle of nowhere.

Imagine our top prospects reach their potential. Great news! Except that likely means the Habs have a few good/very-good players, but no elite talent. Forget having superstars like Tampa or Colorado, we won't even have a critical mass of top-end talent like St. Louis has and Boston had. Even if Suzuki, Poehling, Fleury and Brook become as good as we hope, we still can't compete with the top-tier teams. By the time Caufield is ready to break out, Price and Petry will be past their prime and Weber close to retiring. So what the hell are we doing?

Either build today's team or build tomorrow's team. That requires risk, because you'll have to sacrifice one to gain the other.
I agree. Tough decisions to make with some of the older guys pretty soon. Someone like Petry could net an incredible return and it looks like Fleury or Brook could fill that spot in the near future. Danault is still young but he could be flipped for that crucial LD upgrade that we need while giving Poehling and KK a chance.

If rebuilding, I think you have to look at the room and keep the guys that keep everything in check. Consider moving the others

Who is the elite talent on Vegas?

As mentioned above, Stone is close to elite. Pacioretty at his best can be one of the league's best snipers.

If you're referring to their 2018 SCF run, W. Karlsson had an elite season and Marchessault was close.

Vegas isn't much of a guide, however. It's a roster built from unique circumstances and surprise career spikes.

So basically what you are saying is... anything can happen.....

Technically, yes, anything can happen. However, trusting in luck and fate isn't a valid management strategy, any more than buying lottery tickets is a valid retirement plan.

Look at the Blues last year. Nothing earth shattering about their team in the regular season.. now look at the Lightning...

Nobody on Vegas is elite, aside from the coach. And GM should keep his yap shut saying these ridiculous statements.
Regardless of the cap in play today, should still be able to re-invent the roster in 2 or 3 seasons to make it competitive let alone compete for the ultimate goal.

You don't necessarily need elite players. But you need players that played like they would be elite. Nobody thought Binnington was elite. But he played like an elite goalie. Kucherov last year was an elite player, but didn't play like he was elite in the playoffs. Yet, if you want to have the greatest chance to have players that played like elite....might as well have elite players....

Everything can happen? Sure. But really...everyting? First, sucks that everything didn't happen to us since 25 years. And then, you still have a greater chance to see Drouin score goals than to see Nick Cousins become Jo Drouin....So everything is way too large here...

Which is why I used the word "anything"

Saw this (didn't bother listening)... Looks like Carey Price has been made a better person already. He is saying the more right things now. It's a process. He'll get there.

The Blues have had the same defense for many years and goaltending adequate in the playoffs. St Louis problem was they couldn't score goals come playoffs time and they acquired, within 2 years, guys that helped them offensively with Schenn, O'Reilly, Perron and Bozak. That's the difference between St Louis and Montreal, the Blues picked a direction.

The Blues were referenced in the discussion of elite players. I wouldn't consider anyone on the Blues roster to be elite

well the smart thing would be to talk to Price and let him what the plan is and that if he wants out they will do their best to trade him at some point down the road. You need him to say the right things so it doesn't tarnish his trade value if it looks like he's demanding a trade. Not saying he would or wouldn't want out, but if you look to trade Price in the summer after you pay him his 8.75M bonus, he will be owed something like 44M over 6 years which is just over 7M a year. We could retain say 10% if it meant we got something really good back.

I'd look at the Avs to see if we could pry Byram. I know it's a total pipedream but if the Avs struggle with goaltending, the have the cap space and several top young D prospects so they might be desperate to win hopefully. Granted you would hate to have a Roy part II happen but if Price wants out then not much they can do as I doubt they could turn us into a contender in a year.

Except they were hands down the best team in 2019 starting in Jan. One of the reasons I laugh at MB and his points in Oct/Nov anything can happen mantra. No it really can't when you come up against a team like the Blues who a rolling over everyone at the approach to the show.
