I said minus the cup run, but everyone says St Louis couldn't get past LA/Chi ok they lost twice to LA and once to CHI, they also lost to MIN, NSH, SJ, COL x 2, VAN again.....if a team is BUILT to win.....they should get past those teams at least, right?
Washingtons depth performed well in that run. Smith Pelley, Burakovsky, Eller Dowd etc. They performed above their pay grade and the Caps have always just been a top heavy team otherwise.
I agree St Louis was a contender for years that just couldnt get past Chicago and LA. Quick was a big reason St Louis couldnt advance but they played well against LA.

@Lt Dan you mean this post where he says Washington's depth PLAYED ABOVE THEIR PAYGRADE? Which is why you get in and anything can happen you know...like players playing above their paygrade?

You can't leave someone's cup run out is disingenuous . Why not also leave out the years they faced the Kings or Hawks?

It's called getting lucky

Love that circular logic of "half the league is a cup contender every year by making the playoffs" and "winning the cup isn't easy."

When you think about it, every team is a cup contender now. All they have to do is win enough games to get into the playoffs. But half the battle is just being in the league.
Well let's see,

If you take the top 2 seeds for each division how many actually reach the cup finals? or even the top 4.

Last year

BOS lost in round 1
TOR lost in round 2
CAR made top 4
NJ lost in round 2
COL lost in round 1
DAL made top 4
VGK Won the whole thing
EDM lost in round 2

Year before

FLA lost in round 2
TOR lost in round 1
CAR lost in round 2
Made top 4
COL won the whole thing
MIN lost in round 1
CAL lost in round 2
EDM made top 4

2019-2020

BOS lost in round 2
TB won the whole thing
WAS lost in round 1
PHI lost in round 2
STL lost in round 1
COL lost in round 2
VKG made top 4
EDM didn't make it past qualifying

Last 3 years, 24 teams were the top 2 in their division and 8 of them made the top 4.....a 3rd....

So yea, get in, and things will more than likely happen

It's called getting lucky

So 8 playoff series in 9 years is built to win? Cmon man....

And yea....they got in.....and they got lucky.....imagine that.

Kinda sounds like he agreed with the getting in and getting lucky part....

while repeatedly facing two multiple cup winners

repeatedly? 3 times...it was THREE times....they also lost to MIN, NSH, SJ, COL x 2, VAN

You would think they would be able to get past at least 4 of those teams right? Being BUILT TO WIN and all

This argument boils down to odds of winning like in March Madness.. Moorhead St vs. UConn -- although obviously not as extreme.
The best team usually wins a 7-game series, unless the best team runs into a red hot goaltender.

In the case of the Kings...oh wait, nevermind.

It's not out of 9 though, it;s out of 17 playoff series, they lost to LA and CHI 3 times
It is out of 9 because it was 9 years

Also, they played LA and Chicago four times. So... you can't count either

Yea, but they LOST to him which is the discussion....3 times....and out of 9 years.....so are we discounting the # of series they actually played, just so you can call it repeatedly? Even though it was only 4 series (3 they lost) in 9 years, how in the world is that repeatedly? Hell it's not even frequent....

The Caps won because Holtby played better in close games than he had in the previous seasons. Despite his great career playoff save percentage, he always managed to let in a softy from a bad angle late in a close game except in 2018. This is how the Caps finally managed to get by Pittsburgh...that other team that won cups in the 2010s.
