Mikael Backlund guarantees Game 6 win

Daniel Alfredsson guaranteed a game 6 and 7 win back in 04 (they lost). Daniel Sedin guaranteed a game 7 win in the cup finals in 2011. Look how those worked out. I still find it strange that Messier is lauded as a god because his team happened to win when he guaranteed. I think this kind of talk happens a lot more than people realize and is a non-issue.

Backlund does wear 11.

I understand team leaders making these comments.

Title should be changed to "guarantees the Flames won't lose game 6" to reflect what he actually said.

This stuff always gets twisted by the media. Messier, word for word, said "We will win game 6." He didn't say he guaranteed it, but to be honest it's basically the same thing.

Who cares? What do you expect him to say? I hope we win? This gives zero extra motivation to the Canucks. If they can't get motivated to not get eliminated then nothing will motivate them.

ppl are missing the point. The Canucks are VERY motivated. They don't NEED any more motivation, but why bother giving them more?

The way this was said, I don't think it really effects much. He didn't say it emphatically or anything. If anything, this is going to effect Calgary more than Vancouver.

Both teams are very motivated, this a MOOT point.

Yep, Canucks are going to have to play better than they did last night, not sure they can do they the Saddledome, but it is the playoffs.

Lamest thread ever...he makes a not that strongly worded statement that his team is going to win the next game and it gets a thread?

Different situation if he said something inflammatory or called out a specific player.

yes, it gets a thread.

depends what side of the fence you sit on.

vancouver fans are making a big deal out of it.

calgary fans downplaying it.

thread-worthy.

head games.

Even Canucks fans aren't making a big deal out of it. Maybe the Vancouver media, but that would be about it.

It just adds more incentive, I think. Was wondering what others thought of these kind of situations.

I enjoy hearing about it. Its just mental battles going on for each side. But I think it has nothing to do with the focus on the ice or incentive.

He's just expressing confidence in his teammates. (But I wouldn't say that in the same position, since I think it backfires more often than it helps.)

I'm not sure why statements like this are taken as motivational for either side.

As if the Flames were kind of bored with this whole thing, but now they're really into it. Or as if the Canucks are offended by the idea of the Flames thinking they will win.

This is a head game? The team saying they are going to win the next game in this situation is a head game? I think everyone knows that the home crowd in Calgary is likely to play a factor and that Calgary really wants to win this game and avoid game 7. I don't see how there's any additional gamesmanship with this statement.

Yes, players like to win and play to win.

Still, there might be some impact. If one assumes that people will do their best without encouragement then motivational stuff don't work. But it does work. This little jab will probably have little to no effect, but perhaps it has some effect for some players.

This is the classic "let the result drive headline" sports narrative. If Backlund has no distinguishing effect on the rest of the series (for better or worse) the story will be:

"Backlund a clutch playoff warrior gaurenteeing victory" if Calgary happens to win

"Backlund a Thornton-esque choker, crumbles under the pressure" if Calgary loses

I just don't care for it much, I much rather see who proves it on the ice.

Couldn't agree with this more! You hit the nail on the head here. It's the result (which has a huge uncontrollable variability for any one player.. 99+%) that shapes how we see players.
