I'm not sure what to make of this hire. If we had hired a coach with a connection to Elvis, that would have said we're keeping Elvis. Instead we just changed the job title of someone with no apparent connection to Elvis or coaching. So I'm not sure how to read this, but it sure doesn't signal were doing all we can to salvage our investment in Elvis.
Let's not make it sound like he knows nothing about goaltending. The guy was a great goaltender. He was very solid with position and technique. Something Elvis can learn from.

I don't think we need to reinvent the wheel, we just need a guy who understand goaltending.

Additionally, he wasn't even in the country as far as I know.

His role was listed as a development coach but I believe he did it all from Europe to work with any prospects we had over there in addition to scouting. We don't actually even have any European goalie prospect at the moment.
This is interesting I didn’t know this

Elvis needs to invest some reflection and time into his career IMO...

Not saying he's a bad coach, but he and Jarmo go way back. The Finnish version of the Old Boys' Club type of hire.

I mean you could say that about most of his staff. He split his initial pay for his first scouting job to bring Ville Siren with him, he's worked with Babcock previously as well.

Sergei Ivanov from SKA is playing very good. Also we can draft anyone.

Asked what aspect of Merzlikins’ games he planned to attack first, Bäckström didn’t blink. He didn’t want to talk specifics because he plans to meet with Merzlikins when he’s in Columbus beginning this month for the Blue Jackets’ development camp.
“If you look around the league at all the teams where goalies are successful, they have two (things) in place: they have good team structure and good team defense,” Bäckström said. “It goes hand in hand. The goalie is there to support the players, and the players help the goalie. They need each other.

“I played for Jacques Lemaire in Minnesota. His style of hockey was really good for the goalies. It’s hard for me to say (before Babcock arrives) what kind of hockey we’re going to play, but for sure that’s how goalies like to play — with structure and good defensive in front of them.”

It's interesting that the head coach hire (Babcock) is very experienced and we probably expected the goaltending coach to be very experienced too. This isn't out of left field but at the same time doesn't scream desperation (the most experienced guy no matter the cost and fit). But this could work - Bäckström doesn't seem to be coming in guns blazing trying to fix this and that, and at least there's nothing in these quotes that should bother Elvis.

Hoping for the best!

Experience is relative. He's not being asked to coach special teams or structure the defense. His job is to teach the guy how to stop pucks effectively. He's 45 and has probably done this for over 30 years. His goaltending experience is extensive. it is just going to come down to how he connects with the goaltenders he works with. That communication is a 2 way street.

We know from previous comments Elvis takes his relationship with his coach very seriously. The issue he had with Manny is that it became "too buddy/buddy" in my opinion. I don't doubt Backstrom's technical knowledge. If he is firm and fair with his giving his information and doesn't let details slip he should be fine. Just set realistic expectations and accountability from the start and don't let it slip.

They shared the same trauma, from different perspectives and with almost certainly different reactions/means of coping. It was probably doomed.

Almost certainly the new goalie coach is being brought in to see if he can restore/improve/get through to Elvis. It's an effort to solve the goalie problem from within, so to speak.

This is true but even before that Elvis came over here and took up golf to just get to bond with Manny from the beginning.

Backstrom was a very positionally sound goalie. Exactly where Elvis needs work. This could be the perfect match if Elvis improves positioning and uses his athleticism only when he needs it. I'm not sure anyone would ever quantify Manny as a very technical goalie.

Does anyone know if Backstrom actually signed a new contract to be the goalie coach? I don't pretend to know if a European development specialist actually has a contract or is he an at will employee that can be hired, fired, or promoted to a new position?

It would give Jarmo a lot of flexibility if Backstrom is an at will employee that can be sent back to Europe if Jarmo wants.

I'm going to assume this is a contracted position like all other assistant coaches. I wouldn't move to the USA from Europe for anything less.

Item No. 2: Coaches returning

There likely won’t be any public announcement coming until later this summer, but it sounds as if the Blue Jackets’ entire assistant coaching staff under previous coach Brad Larsen will remain in place under new coach Mike Babcock.

Associate coach Pascal Vincent and assistants Steve McCarthy, Kenny McCudden and Jared Boll each have one year remaining on their contracts with the Blue Jackets.

The Blue Jackets haven’t yet made Babcock’s hiring official, and they won’t until at least July 1, when Babcock’s final year under contract with Toronto expires. Until then, Babcock can’t serve in any capacity with the Blue Jackets, including interacting with players, coaches or staffers, and nobody with the club is permitted to discuss their plans to hire him.

But a source this week told The Athletic that the plan is for the assistants to begin working with Babcock when he comes aboard in July. If all goes as planned, they’d fulfill their final contract years. If all goes well next season, any or all of them could sign extensions.

It could be a bitter pill for Vincent to swallow. He has been a candidate for the top job in Columbus during their last two hiring processes, first when Larsen was hired to replace John Tortorella and earlier this summer when Babcock got the job.

Vincent was given permission by the Blue Jackets to interview with other clubs — he reportedly met with Calgary before they hired Ryan Huska — after Larsen was fired.

The Blue Jackets attempted to negotiate a settlement with Toronto that would have released Babcock from his contract with the Maple Leafs a month early, but couldn’t come to an agreement. He’s expected to sign a four-year contract with Columbus.

Vincent, McCarthy, Boll, and McCudden to return

Regardless if his past antics ANYONE gain valuable experience working with Babcock.
Vincent, if he's everything they say he is, can add a pretty valuable line to his resume. He may get a shot in a year or two and as for the others it sure cannot hurt...

Don’t mind one or two (particularly Vincent) coming back. A bit surprised and disappointed they all are / Babcock doesn’t have anyone and/or isn’t allowed to hire anyone in his rolodex.

Working under Babcock is a huge resume item for Vincent. Countless coaches have come through under Babcock. I doubt "bitter pill" is the right way to describe Vincent's mindset right now.

I'd be very surprised if there's no changes. I mean Babcock can't even talk to anyone right now?

That is puzzling. If he isn't allowed to talk to anyone then how can he be making decisions about his group? Must be back channels here.
