Why are we extending the defensive coach who helped oversee the two worst defensive seasons in franchise history? Just an absolute loser brained franchise.

It’s maddening. I don’t understand why they keep hiring from within the same organization that has failed for years. Get some new voices in the room.
Yeah let's blame the guys who had to coach an AHL defense against NHLers for a season.

The whole, taking last year with a grain of salt applies to coaching as well. They were part of a system that was flawed from the head. We have no idea how well those individuals did within the system

Cool, so maybe get a sample size of games with an NHL defense and new system before handing out a new contract.

What was the excuse for '21-'22?

You mean the season we were expected to be a bottom 5 lottery contender and finished just under .500? The season that it literally took 100 points to make the playoffs? The team that way overachieved in what was essentially in the first year of the "retool" That team?

The season in which we allowed the 5th-most goals in the league, a then-franchise record (by 21), yes.

normally i'd be 100% behind a take like this, but it's hard to say whether mccarthy actually made things worse the last two years given the circumstances.

21-22:
- peeke on the top pair
- bean/boqvist getting major minutes together
- defensive liabilities on the wings (voracek/domi)
- roslovic/rookie sillinger as middle six centers
- awful goaltending from both elvis and korpi
- broken larsen 'system'

22-23:
- injuries forcing gudbranson into a top pair role
- peeke unable to ride werenski's coattails
- berni + christiansen + bjork playing major minutes
- the same center group as the year before
- the same defensive system
- elvis getting even worse

adding fantilli + texier to the forward group and a healthy werenski + provorov + severson to the blueline is obviously a huge upgrade, but it may all be for naught if the goaltending doesn't rebound.

i don't think there's much mccarthy could've done (or can do this season) to move the needle – but i do agree that it's loser-brained to give him an extension before the season even starts.

... in a season we were expected to be the worst team in the league as we just traded our franchise C and D away....

We finished well above where we were expected to finish.

Once again, do you know how each of those coaches were responsible for what? It was Larsen's responsibility, they were just doing what he was telling them to do. How do you know they didn't want to do things differently?
