It largely depends on how Babcock tries to split ice time between his too 3 Centers.
But given the fact Eichel has been due for his big breakout (after bad luck the past two seasons with significant injury) I’ll go with him. Shocking, but I think due to Skinner being In a contract year and the potential to have better linemates like Reinhart and skinner or sheary compared to girgensens Rodrigues and Pominville will help a great deal.
From all accounts and interviews he seems pumped up to make a dent in the league as he says he’s made none. Staying healthy is key here for both guys.
I think if both guys do stay healthy and play over 75 both are PPG.
I say it will go Eichel-87
Matthews 84.
Jack will get more opportunity, PP time and with the likes of risto-Reinhart already being good on the PP guys like Dahlin, muttkestadt and co should open up more room for him.
That being said Matthews will score more goals and could very well outproduc Eich as the leafs offense could be extremely potent.
JvR | 81 | 11 | 9 | 20 | 184:55 |
Marner | 82 | 8 | 19 | 27 | 179:59 |
Bozak | 81 | 3 | 10 | 13 | 177:11 |
Gardiner | 82 | 1 | 14 | 15 | 169:43 |
Kadri | 80 | 12 | 7 | 19 | 167:06 |
Rielly | 76 | 1 | 24 | 25 | 166:51 |
Nylander | 82 | 5 | 7 | 12 | 165:26 |
Marleau | 82 | 5 | 4 | 9 | 163:15 |
Matthews | 62 | 5 | 8 | 13 | 133:04 |
I'm going to go with Matthews.
Now before any Sabres fans mention this I know last season Eichel had more points, however the difference was 64 for Eichel compared to the 63 for Matthews. However Matthews had 5 more goals and played 5 less games than Eichel. Although maybe we should not count last season since both of them were injured and missed significant amount of games.
When both played a full season Matthews had 40 goals and 29 assists for 69 points in 82 games played, where as when Eichel was a rookie he had 24 goals and 32 assists for 56 points in 81 games played.
You say that first part like a sabres fan would hit quite and brag about having one more point in five more games. That wouldn’t happen because it wouldn’t be looking through proper context. You mention that Matthews had a better rookie season then Eichel, very true. However Despite Eichels team scoring over 70 less goals he has more points per game then Auston since the beginning of Matthews career. He gets more ice time but playing against the top defenders each night and still producing as a kid no less is impressive, especially since in that time the last seasons he’s suffered serious injury.
Anyway both guys have pros and cons with situations on either team and both are in the same tier should be an interesting season.
I think Marner and Eichel are closer than Eichel and Matthews tbh
Matthews
Marner/Eichel
The chart doesn't show a per game average so obviously matthews is going to look worse since he missed 20 games, on a per game average mattews would slot in just after bozak for 4th on the team which still isnt very good, but not as bad as your depicting it.Babcock has stated that Matthews will be on the top PP unit.

Except Matthews has outscored him at every single level and so far in their NHL careers while get significantly less ice timeDespite what Toronto fans want to believe, I think they are dead even.
Very similar to Nylander-Ehlers.
I won't vote due because I am really split, but it definitely shouldn't be a blowout.
Not surprised.
Matthews, Eichel hasn't even hit ppg in 3 years despite being gifted plenty of ice time and PP ice time, inb4 "muh teammates," funny how playing with a glorified third/fourth liner in Hyman for Matthews entire career didn't stop him from scoring 40 in his first year and going PPG in his second year.
Eichel has not once demonstrated any superior ability and there is no reason to think he will start now, even watching the Buffalo game v Toronto was a great example of this, Matthews was carrying the pace far more than Eichel was. Eichel is simply not the superstar many thought he was going to be (at least not yet) and he's certainly not going to best Matthews this year.
