The Naki
above average athletics are usually open to technique changes for the better. MLB players always tinkering with there swings, etc. I switched my baseball swing over to a slowpitch swing a ways back and now crush the ball 300+ feet, change is not as hard as you think.

I think it's easier for some guys than others certainly, I think it might depend on how much actually needs changing

Tinkering is one thing but a wholesale technique change is a different animal I'd imagine

Good to see Jesper Lindgren logging some big minutes for his Liiga team. He just hit the 80 game mark in a professional men's league and is only 21 years old. He's about to double his point totals from last season in half a dozen less games.

Was impressed with him in some of the Leaf scrimmages during TC. He's developed to the point where I wouldn't even identify him as an offensive defender anymore. He's a pretty safe player and he makes high IQ plays. Hoping to see him come over to the Marlies with Liljegren graduating soon and Durzi being shipped out.

Liljegren is still a ways away from the NHL.

Here is the 2nd period

9th Shift: Lilly receives a pass at the point, and moves across the ice, he gets a good shot away that gets stopped. Bracco with a great chance on the rebound but couldn’t completely lift the puck. Lilly goes back to get the puck in his zone and moves across the ice. With the forechecker coming he passes it to Sandin. Lilly gets the puck back moments later and carries the puck looking for a pass, but can’t one with all the pressure, and goes back behind his net trying to escape his man, however a second man is also coming to him. He tries to pass to his teammate out of the zone but it goes for icing.
A little bit of a tough sequence for Lilly. The forecheck was strong, and he couldn’t find a pass, so he just carried it around the net before finding a teammate outside the zone. The problem was his teammate was also covered. Lilly was smart in not making risky pass in his zone, and instead held on to it trying to find a teammate.
Shift Length: 0:59

10th Shift: After some nice boardwork by the Marlies in the opposing zone, Lilly moves up and receives pass near the right faceoff dot, but his shot is blocked. Lilly goes back to his point afterwards, and tries to keep the loose puck in the zone, but can’t and it’s a delayed offside.
Shift Length: 0:44

11th Shift: Lilly gets the puck at the blueline and tries to get move it by his man, but isn’t able too and it results in a breakaway, which the Moose score on. On the faceoff, Lilly gets the puck from Sandin, and passes it to the neutral zone to his teammate who tips it in.
Not a good play by Lilly on the goal. Seems like he tried to take it across, but hit the Moose player and he got a breakaway out of it.
Shift Length: 0:36

12th Shift: Nothing noteworthy here
Shift Length: 0:24

13th Shift: Nothing noteworthy here
Shift Length: 0:23

14th Shift: A powerplay shift. Nothing much here aside from Lilly carrying the puck up a couple times.
Shift Length: 1:22

15th Shift: After the Moose lift the puck out of the zone, Lilly gets the falling puck at the centre ice line and passes to Sandin. Later, Lilly puts the loose puck along the boards behind his net to the open side. Lilly ices the puck from the side boards, as he didn’t realize his teammate was not there. Lilly gets the puck and passes to his teammate who just chips it out of the zone. A little later, Lilly receives a pass from Sandin on the right side, and carries it for a bit before dropping it back to Sandin, and goes off for a change.
Shift Length: 1:20

16th Shift: Moose clear the puck, and Lilly on the right side near centre ice, pokes at the puck to get it away from the Moose player to his teammate in the middle of the ice. Later, Lilly on the point makes a quick pass to Sandin on the other side. Sandin looks for a shot, and then curls back. Under pressure from 2 players, he tries to get the pass back to Lilly, but it gets blocked and Sandin runs into one of the Moose players, and turns the puck over and breakaway starts, but fortunately for Sandin, the Moose player that got the pass at the Marlies blueline stumbled, and as a result, Lilly and two other Marlie players were able to get back and triple team the Moose player.
When they got back, The Moose player was having trouble controlling the puck, and Lilly took the man, and his teammate took the puck. Nice bit of teamwork from the two.
Sandin did a little too much, and almost paid for it.

Here is the 3rd

17th Shift: A powerplay and even strength shift. The powerplay didn’t really have any moments worth talking about. After the powerplay however, the puck gets away from Sandin at the point, and the Moose get a break away, but Hutchison makes the save. Lilly picks the puck up after and puts it along the side boards to his teammate who isn’t able to control it.
I’m not sure what happened on the play. The camera wasn’t positioned at the puck when it got away from Sandin, and the replay was pretty much useless. Either the puck went underneath Sandin’s stick, or it bounced on him.
Shift Length: 1:29

18th Shift: After Sandin carries the puck with pressure on him to the sideboards on the right side, Lilly takes the puck and passes to Moore ahead of him who trips and turns the puck over. Moose get a shot away that gets blocked by Sandin.
Nice read by Lilly. Sandin had players on him and was about to run out of space, Lilly followed the play and got the puck.
Shift Length: 0:28

19th Shift: Lilly retrieves the puck behind his net, and with pressure coming, he puts it along the boards where his teammate pick it up
Shift Length: 0:30

20th Shift: Nothing noteworthy here
Shift Length: 0:10

21st Shift: Lilly receives a pass in his zone from Loverde, and holds on to the puck waiting for the Marlies to complete a change. He passes to his teammate on the left side, and a pass later, he gets the drop pass and then sends a pass to a teammate just outside the opposing blueline who tips it in. Later, Lilly goes back for the puck in his zone, he sees a man coming behind him, and he fakes as if he will put the puck along the boards, and fakes again to one side before putting it to a teammate on the other side.
Cheeky play there by Lilly.
Shift Length: 1:42

22nd Shift: Nothing noteworthy here
Shift Length: 0:34

23rd Shift: After the faceoff, Lilly quickly puts the puck behind his net that Marincin isn’t able to get.

Please keep these up, I don't catch enough Marlies games and I can't ever find highlights.

Love to hear how Liljegren is doing on a game-to-game basis.

I'm loving the "coached" looking play of both Sandin and Liljegren there. However there was one half-hearted forechecker and the rest of the opposition line was peeling off for a change. Of course a textbook break out drill executed by probably the Marlies' threee most skilled player looked effortless.

P.S. That's the exact breakout passing play that Phil Kessel refused to do according to Steve Spott.
I’d love to keep them both together for one more full season and bring them up as a polished rookie duo with chemistry who can just be plugged into 5-6 spots the lineup.

Obviously a lot can happen between now and then but I love that they’ve paired them up.

The Sandin-Liljegren pairing has to be the youngest ever in the AHL doesn't it?

Sandin is the youngest and Liljegren is the 7th youngest player in the league. According to Quant hockey, only 7 18 year old D-men have played 25 games or more in the AHL. We have two of them.

Both of them blew away Slava Voynov, Hampus Lindholm, and Oliver Kylington in terms of PPG as well.

Expect these two in the top 4 some day.

He looks out of place at centre.

He looks much stronger at his natural position, which is to be expected.

Interestingly, he was named 1st. star last night, and had 2 assists.

He's been on the scoresheet more frequently recently.

...
Grundstrom 7 points in 8 games with Ontario.

And 2 Leafs picks in 2nd. and 3rd. in AHL scoring.

Players either in the Leafs system, or who were once in the Leafs system are 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th in AHL scoring.

I will be looking to do more of these when the games are on TV. I can at least record them and track the games when they are done.
