Not be a negative Nelly but we had a guy that was all flash but couldn't put a puck into an empty net if his life depended on it, he has since QUIT on the team. Hope Schief doesn't become like ''that guy'' who just couldn't finish!

Burmi was a good possession player but I don't know that he generated anywhere near the quality of chances that Scheifele does. It's actually pretty unbelievable the amount of point-blank chances he's set his linemates up for that they haven't capitalized on.

Come back after 40 games. I'll bet he's sitting around 25pts. Scorers slump, just like the rest of the team - he and the others will work it out. He's far too dynamic and driven not to.

I agree. Eye test and the numbers both support the idea that Scheifele is creating offense and just not getting the breaks.

Just hope that PoMo and Scheif both realize this and stick to their guns. Worst thing would be a demotion and/or Scheifele getting down on himself because pucks aren't going in.

I think PoMo has allot of faith in Mark's game and Mark is one of the more resilient players on the team IMO. He is a mentally tough kid that has always been able to fight through challenges right back to before he was drafted.

By the numbers, Scheif and Wheeler have faced the toughest opposition on average and they've also rocked it with some of the team's top possession numbers.

Scheifele will get his points. IMO it is absolutely vital for our future success that he be a beast being able to play tough minutes the "right way". The kid is a big part of our future and we need total buy in on a defense first responsible game. Let the scoring come in its due course. Especially if we are winning.

That's interesting truck - neither did that well last year, IIRC. Good to hear.

It's also nice that teams have to choose between two lines when deploying their top lines - gives LLF a bit of freedom to work if KSW gets keyed on.

But, but: think of the poor Fantasy pools, KB! ;)

The kicker is I have Scheifele in my main pool (and Wheeler for that matter) but points there aren't nearly as important to me as the Jets winning. And they can't do that if the play like they are in a beer league.

It looks like Lowry is also doing okay in the possession stats. Nice to have a couple of big young centers that can play a strong two-way game.

I think that Scheifele's offense will come around, as will that whole line's.

I also expect that Lowry's offense will pick up over time. He'll never be a big producer, but he looks like he'll be a tough guy to play against, and he'll chip in offensively now and again.

What is interesting for the future is both Scheifele and Lowry are just 21 yo. And both have the size so desired down the middle in the West.

Scheifele's got some size, but he's not what you'd call strong on his skates...

But that really is not going to impact his game. He is strong on his stick, and comes up with the puck an amazing amount in puck battles and he has outstanding offensive instincts. But most of all he plays a big centers down low defensive game. He ties up the right areas on the defensive side and gives tremendous puck support to the defenseman. This is the big center model in the West and he is learning to play it to a tee. In a couple years he may have a game comparable to Kopitar.

He's getting very odd usage.

Given Perreault's history as a strong possession player, and Little's history outscoring and out-possessing regardless of usage I had Scheifele pegged for soft offensive minutes. Instead Scheif is basically being deployed as a defensive specialist getting the second highest competition and by far the most D zone starts.

It's hard to argue with I guess given how the team is playing, but it seems odd to me and I think it's at least partially to blame for his lack of offense. His underlying numbers are pretty good for his usage this year.

no matter the situation PMo places him in he fails to find success. He's busting. We need Burmi.

A guy in the second year of his NHL career is busting.... ok :shakehead . I'm not sure what game you were watching but I think he had a pretty decent game today against the Ducks. He's slumping and we would hope he is scoring some more but good lord he hasn't even played 100 games in the NHL yet. Stat watching gets you know where.

Has Maurice made any comments about Scheifele's usage? Are we just going the Red Wings style - grooming offensive talent by having them play strict defensive assignments first??

Will we be complaining 2, 3 years from now if Scheif is a 6'3" Datsyuk (like) player?

Still, for an offensively challenged team I wonder about having our most talented player play a checking role.

i can understand the usage. where else do you slot him in? I guess you could move him up with Kane, and slide Perreault to the wing. Leaving Lowry centering the 3rd with Frolik and Hali. But I'm not sure that improves either line.

 He is not 'busting'.

Look at his usage. Look at the assignments he's being given. What about the 10 game stretch prior to these last five games? .7PPG over that stretch. Is that 'busting'? Hockey is about winning - points are part of that, but so is ensuring your competition doesn't score. It's a bit more complex than just looking at the box scores after the game.

So I'll ask again: if points are what you care about, was he 'busting' in that ten game stretch?
