Here's the hard and quick numbers via capgeek:
ROSTER|
Total players up at the big club | 25
Active roster players | 21
Injured players (short term)| 3 (Kane, Slater, Halischuk)
Injured players out for year | 1 (Clitsome)
SALARY CAP | AAV
Today's Space(AAV we can take on right now)| $3,184,172
Deadline space (AAV we can take on at the deadline)| $5,062,018
Max potential LTIR room | $2,066,667
Deadline AAV + max LTIR | $7,128,685
If we spend that 5.062m we could put Clitsome on LTIR and pick up another 2.066m in salary. See Capgeek for a good explanation on how LTIR works and why you need to be right up against the cap.
Rental trade bait| Remaining term
Olli Jokinen| $4.5 Modified NTC
Devin Setoguchi| $3.0
Mark Stuart| $1.7
Chris Thorburn| 866k
Zach Redmond| 715k #
Al Montoya| 601k
Adam Pardy| 600k
# Redmond is extremely valuable because he has a 2-way contract and doesn't need waivers
Possible non-rental trade bait| Remaining term
Dustin Byfuglien | 3 X 5.2 5 team NTC
Evander Kane | 5 x 5.25
Needs short term:
- Top 4 LHD
- 3rd line wingers that can slide into the top 6
Needs long term:
- Top 4 LHD
- Starting goaltender
- Young 3rd liners with top 6 potential
The question remains, are we going to buy, sell or stand pat at the deadline?
The case for selling:
We are fighting for the last playoff spot with 5 other teams, have the second least points and the most GP. There's only 3 games remaining between now and the deadline. Chevy has essentially stood pat the last two seasons, I think he's sick of doing that. We have an awful lot of assets that could be sold off, and probably half of the players above will be gone in the summer anyways. Personally I wouldn't mind retaining Stuart (at a cheaper price on the bottom pair), Redmond and Montoya. Jokinen could possibly fetch a high 1st especially with salary retained, he's hovering around 50th in center points.
With Kane, Halischuk, and Slater coming back we can fill holes where we move players. O'Dell and Redmond can be called up. Postma looked decent in his game back and can also fill in. Selling may not affect our playoff chances much.
The case for buying:
We have momentum on our side, the coaching change has done wonders to this team. Out of our only 3 losses two were 1 goal games (one in OT) and only 1 was more than 1 goal. This team has the best roster since moving to Winnipeg, and the emergence of Scheifele and Trouba has done wonders. Montoya has shown to be a very capable backup and is having a career year. The team and fanbase is hungry for the playoffs. If we make the playoffs, there's a good chance we'll end up keeping the better UFAs.
We also have just above $5 million in banked space (more with LTIR options) at the deadline, we could potentially buy a player or two for cheap since nobody has cap space. Hopefully these players are not rentals.
