It's not like we traded for him to plop into our Top 4. Well I hope not.

From JRs comments sounds like he was brought in as a PP specialist. John/Tripp alluded to going with 7-D tonight during last nights game.

Our PP is 30th in the league. He surely can't do any worse on that PP then what we are already seeing.

Now if they start giving him 4th line minutes, then shake your heads, but if used strictly as a PP specialist, who cares.

Seriously, this is a no-risk, high reward move. We didn't give up anything in an effort to improve an obvious detriment to this team.

The only way this ends badly is if this is JR's ONLY move. And unfortunately, that's not out of the realm of possibility.

All of you who keep reciting the names of our offensive defensemen as to why this is bad move, please go look up what they've done on the powerplay in their NHL career. Nothing, that's what--Corvo is the best of them on the powerplay and that says a lot because he's not very good at it. Faulk was useful on a backdoor play last year and once that got shut down he's sucked to the point that he has *1* powerplay point this season, which was on a 5-on-3. Pitkanen is good at getting the puck into the zone but doesn't do much while the puck is there. Sanguinetti and McBain haven't even been judged by the coaching staff to be useful of a spot there--rightly or wrongly, a GM has to deal with his coach's preferences. That leaves nobody.

A few weeks ago this team was using five forwards on the powerplay and they've been using four forwards on both units for the last several games. You really think this team couldn't use a defenseman who has proven to be useful there? For a 7th round pick and a guy Tampa just waived again?

I agree with point 1...no-risk move.

On point 2, the way the team is playing, I'm not sure I want JR trading for anything (other than maybe selling off in order to improve the team for next year.).

I can't believe what this hockey forum is coming to. French Beer discussions in the last GDT, Classical music discussions in the OT thread, and now a Vonnegut reference.

Where'd all this sudden surge of "culture" come from? Are we becoming as soft as the Hurricanes?

It all started with the ice dancing.

Shut your filthy mouth! That was Canadian beer we were discussing, sir, not French beer. (Though the French do have one that could knock you on your ass that weighs in at 13% ABV)

Besides, I need a respite from making unflattering comments about Whineypeg from time to time.http://hfboards.mandatory.com/images/smilies/ssst.gif

I see MAB getting railroaded at the point by Brouwer, who then takes the puck down the ice and scores a SHG.

Rinse and repeat a few more times and MAB spends the rest of the season in the press box, where he has made a home the past 3 years for similar situations.

You're making an especially hard effort to hate a deal that's the minor-est of the minor.

Did you have someone you were eyeing in the 7th round you were hoping the Canes would go after?

Frederick Andersen? Oh wait, he can't go back into the draft again.

Scotty walker has some real talent that reminds him of himself. Without our 7th JR is going to be forced to waste another 2nd to make sure no one else steals them away.

GM Jim Rutherford says trade deadline day could be "quiet day" for Canes. Not expecting to add another D-man after Bergeron acquisition.

:(

I'm trying to be optimistic, but I'm not feeling it if that's the case.

I get that people don't like this, but let's face facts. The team isn't that good, has lost 8 of the last 9, and won't have their starting goalie for the rest of the season. The trade deadline is when prices for players are the highest.

Do we really want JR to pay a high price for an average talent with the "hope" that the team might turn it around enough to sneak into the playoffs?

Sobering reality.

The team we have in front of us is talented enough to make up a 4-point deficit (with 3 games in hand) and make the playoffs. It's not going to get fixed by shuffling deck chairs at the bottom of the lineup.

I just want him to pick a direction. It's like he wants to bring in a piece to fix the pp, so they can win just enough games to screw themselves out of a decent draft pick.

Either buy or sell! Every year he makes just enough nandy-pandy moves so it comes down to a last game, win and in situation. So frustrating.

Easy to say "buy or sell", but reality is, the Canes don't have much to sell or much to offer to buy.

Who can he reasonably sell? He tried Jokinen, no takers. He is trying McBain, so far no taker. Who else is there to sell that we'd want to sell and that other teams would want? Who can we offer up in order to "buy" something worth buying. Our prospect pool is pretty bare..so that means Murphy? Rask? our 1st round pick?

If the team was playing well, then I'd be all for adding a key piece or two to help, but based on how they are playing, I surely wouldn't offer up what it would take during the deadline.

I put the failure in the "lose and out" situations over the past few years on the Canes "star" players, not on JR.
