I am very surprised by the "why's" from some of the more learned posters on this board. The PP is the most awful thing about this team, we get a PP specialist for a 7th rounder, and there's still b*tching and moaning. Sometimes I think that some of you want the team to fold up their tent and leave.

MAB, at best, is going to bring this team to fighting for the Playoffs on the last game of the season (again). In the unlikely event the Canes win that game, they will be obliterated in the 1st Round.

This move does nothing helpful any way you look at it. Knowing JR, he resigns MAB, we trade Gleason for Enstrom, and go into next year we go into next year with the midget squad at D.

The real boon here is that it allows us to recall Tim Wallace, missing piece.

But seriously, I like the move for a low key move. This is typical JR though with his "half in half out", deadline approach. We'll give up a waiver pickup and a 7th for something that *might* make us better and if it fails, it fails. Better safe than sorry, right?

Just once, I would like to see the front office inspire some confidence in the group by saying... hey, we can do this. Here is a player that can actually make us better. Use him how you wish.

2006 was the only time I recall that happening

Sorry but getting obliterated in the first round, is still helpful.

Profits in the NHL are made by making the playoffs - the difference of having an extra 2 or 3 home gates is enormous. 2-4 million dollars in ticket sales plus parking, plus cut of concessions.

Indeed. I would much rather make the playoffs and get murdered in the first round than have another 9th-11th place finish like every other year.

With the players we have already the PP should be better than it is. I don't really see this as helping much. One player can't move around the other four. So if the other four take to their usual standing in place, it's not like MAB will be able to work any magic either.

The PP is the one area where I am willing to really lay all the blame on the coaching staff.

Getting a better player in the draft is more helpful. Karmanos had a nice windfall the past year, I'm not worried about that. Plus the added ticket revenue from our new division will be significant.

My point is the defense sucks. Until the fix it, the Canes are going nowhere. Adding MAB does nothing to help this, best case scenario he kills it and we add another tiny offensive D for next year.

Plus the Canes have a history of exceeding expectations by a large margin when making the playoffs. IF they make it, I personally think they wouldn't get obliterated. It is likely they lose in round 1 but it wouldn't be a sweep. More likely a 6-7 game series. There's still some serious $$ that can be made in our house with a 1st round playoff appearance. Not to mention ticket sales and hype for next season.

That being said, I'm not holding my breath.

What we would all like to see is JR making positive strides towards fixing the defense for these Playoffs.

The offense is good enough to compete, we need a reliable top-4 defensive minded or at the very least 2-way D. Someone like Giordano, Klesla, Brewer, Kulikov, or on the high end Yandle. Not MAB.

the whole "12 goals in 8 games, including 4 in one of them" says different.

Ok but that's not why MAB was acquired.

This - plus 12.7% on the PP -- As much as people want to hammer the defense, it is not the major problem on this team right now. Put Faulk back in the mix and we are more than serviceable.

I like this move if Bergeron is ONLY used on the PP. He can't make it any worse than it is. No commitment after this year and only lost a 7th rounder and waiver fodder. There is nothing negative here.

I aggree, JR has to go after a top 4 defensive but the time to do that for these playoffs was a long time ago.

That is not a talent issue. The Canes have one of the most talented top-9's in the league, they are just doing less with more at this time.

And the PP is a complete joke. Coaching needs to be re-worked, it is unacceptable.

It is pitiful that a team built solely around offensive D needs to bring in a PP specialist who has spent more time in a pressbox than on the ice the past 3 years. Injuries are an issue... but with Pitkanen, McBain, Faulk, Sanguinetti, and Corvo on the team you would think someone who can provide offense from the blueline would be the last thing the Canes need.

I loved MAB in Montreal, he isn't the strongest defensively, but can make some great defensive plays. His shot is magnificent though, should help the PP

Here's something I hadn't thought of before,

“He’s a veteran guy, and I’ve worked with him before. We’ll simplify it at the beginning,†Muller said. “He has enough base and hockey sense to jump in and feel comfortable.â€

At least Kirk has dealt with MAB before and should be fully aware how he can best be used.

"The defense sucks." I keep hearing this, and hearing this, and hearing this. OK, fine -- but what *about* the defense sucks? Because it didn't seem like it sucked when we were five games over .500 for a brief and shining moment.

Personally, I think what "sucks" about our defense is the same thing that sucks about pretty much everybody not on the first line -- poor movement, poor passing, and handling the puck like it's a hand grenade. And it's further compounded by our inability to score on the PP. Which means that other teams can pressure the puck continually without having to worry about consequences. Guys like Skinner make this worse by trying to skate through the entire opposing team, instead of finding the open man.

We traded a nobody and an option on a second nobody for someone who may have 10% more skill passing and handling the puck. God almighty, I'll take it.

If for nothing more than to be able to call a pairing our "Harrison Bergeron", I am for this move.

I can't believe what this hockey forum is coming to. French Beer discussions in the last GDT, Classical music discussions in the OT thread, and now a Vonnegut reference.

Where'd all this sudden surge of "culture" come from? Are we becoming as soft as the Hurricanes?
