Non-Oiler fan here, but think a couple of things will happen with the Oil.

1. Draisatl- Big Skilled Center that can play right away. Late birthday, and unlike most Oiler 1st round picks, he is actually physically mature.

2. Sam Gagner gets traded, with salary retained to Islanders for Bailey + Defenseman (Matt Carkner)

3. EDM overpays for UFA defensmen, but miss out on legitimate top 4 D, making signings similar to Ference, and expecting bottom pair D to play top 4 minutes, and 3-4 D to go up against top opposition. Pitkanen, Kyle Quincy, and Mike Weaver all get multiyear deals at above market value.

4. Oilers look to UFA route for 3rd and 4th line players, overpaying, but actually fill up some of the holes on the roster by getting some veterans.

5. Team gets off to a bad start because there is a lack of legitimate shutdown players on defense and Eakins gets fired 25 games in. Goaltending is not bad, but without a legit top pair, defense gives up 30+ shots a night and high quality chances while top 6 forwards don't back check or play competent defense.

As for my impressions/predictions for the Oilers:

1. Oilers front office will consider 2018-2019 NHL season as its end point of its window with its concurrent roster and become more aggressive during the 2014 NHL Offseason.
2. See above quoted text/response.
3. Oilers front office will finally wise up about its cap space dilemma.
4. Oilers front office will prioritize blue line needs this 2014 NHL offseason and potentially poach UFA D-men from division rivals.
5. Oilers will have mass call-ups to squeeze in the cap.

This is not what I HOPE will happen, but what I think WILL happen:

2. Ekblad will fall to #3 and Oil will gladly pick him
3. Oilers make a trade for Boychuk.
4. Gagner will get traded in a 2-1 depth deal with the Oil bringing back some salary in a vet.
5. Oilers sign or trade for #2 centre (i.e.: Legwand, Stastny, Sutter)
