Like some of us did back in september--lets make 5 predictions about oilers moves in the off season

here are mine

1) Gagner get traded to the NYI for more then people thought he would get
2) Oilers will be rumoured to be in the hunt for Penner in the off season
3) The oilers trade their first rounder to get immediate help to the line up
4) The Oilers will consider trading Perron but will get cold feet
5) Oilers will think they have a trade for RJ Umberger but the deal will fall a part

1) Sam Gagner gets traded to NY Islanders for Josh Bailey
2) Oilers sign David Moss to a 3-year contract
3) Justin Schultz will be signed to a 5-year contract extension
4) Edmonton wants Leo Komarov, Komarov goes back to Toronto
5) Phaneuf to Edmonton rumours starts after we aren't able to sign Andrei Markov

1. The Oilers trade the 3rd overall pick plus something to the Sabres to secure the 2nd overall pick to draft Aaron Ekblad. This is a result of Dale Tallon going, well, Dale Tallon and drafting a forward to save his job. Oilers trade up to secure Ekblad after the Sabres are rumored to be trading the pick to teams behind Edmonton.
2. Satisfied with riding a defensive core of Ekblad, Schultz, Petry, Ference, Klefbom, and Marincin into next season, MacT does not make a play on any of the bigger names on D via free agency or trade and instead signs local product Derryk Engelland as our 7th defenseman.
3. Darren Dreger starts a rumor on the draft floor that Toronto is interested in Sam Gagner but wants Edmonton to "sweeten the pot" and include a good prospect or future 1st round pick. A few days after the draft, Craig MacTavish announces that Sam Gagner isn't going anywhere and is part of the "solution" not the "problem".
4. The Oilers are very much in the mix to acquire Patrik Berglund from St. Louis after the Blues make the splash of free agency by signing Paul Stastny, but MacTavish is unwilling to move Marincin or Klefbom and Berglund is peddled off elsewhere. The Oilers instead give a massive contract to Steve Ott in the range of 4.25 million/season over 5 years. Fans on HFOilers are livid and blame Kevin Lowe.
5. The Oilers make attempt to add more toughness and character in free agency in addition to Engelland and Ott they sign Shawn Thornton on a massive 2 million/year contract.

I think it is too early and we do not have enough information to do this properly. So many thing could happen this year at this point. Just bullet flying in the dark.

Having said that, all those guesses above me seem very well thought out and have a decent chance of happening.

I also agree with someone who said Eakins is fired at the 40 game mark next year. In typical Oiler fashion the firing will come far too late to make a difference but will absolutely have to be done because Eakins to date has shown nothing resembling the ability to coach in the NHL. Eakins not being fired next year will nothing short of a miracle IMO.

What I think will happen
1.) Edmonton signs a couple UFA 3rd line defence man thinking it will fix the back end...it won't.
2.) Edmonton signs a couple bottom six forwards trying to reshuffle the cards
3.) Edmonton grossly overpays a fringe top six forward
4.) Edmonton drafts Draisatl thinking he will fix their current hole at 2C, he won't be ready.
5.) Edmonton under values Sam Gagner and trades him for a lesser asset... Gagner scores 50-60pts on other team..

What I hope happens
1.) Edmonton packages a bunch of pieces like Gagner, 1st round picks, Klefbom/Marcinin for a legit top pairing defence man.
2.) Edmonton signs Statsny (Unlikey but one can dream)
3.) Edmonton adds to the 3rd overall to trade for the 1st overall and drafts Ekblad
4.) Edmonton find another Perron type deal for a second line winger to compliment Perron and Statsny
5.) Edmonton lands Phanuef

So this is what we're "hoping" for right?

1. The Oilers draft Nylander, requests a trade to be closer to Sweden

2. Oilers trade Gagner and Musil to the Preds for Spauling and Stalberg

3. Oilers fail to sign Markov, Niskanen, Nikitin, Hainsey, etc, settle on a 3 year deal with Pitkanen

4. Oilers trade Marincin, Fasth and 3rd in 2015 to the Islanders for Clutterbuck and Carkner

5. Oilers trade Yakupov to the Panthers for Gudbranson, Kopecky and a 2nd in 2015

Clearly, we'd all be excited for this, fingers crossed everyone.

1 - A leak tells us the Oilers were close to sign a big name free agent, they even offered him slightly more than the team that signed him. My money is on Ryan Callahan; 4 years at 6 million.

2 - The Oilers will make a pitch to obtain Dion Phaneuf from Toronto, whether we get him or not we will know a pitch was made.

3 - The Oilers subtly leak who they have their eyes on at #3 to let us know there is a plan, and they are following it. All signs point to Leon

4 - The Oilers will acquire an older defenseman who has been passed by better and younger players on a team that won a playoff round this year. Matt Greene is clubhouse leader right now.

5 - The Oilers will attempt to trade a current player, the offers will not be good enough so that trade won't happen. Somehow we'll learn about this. Gagner is the leader on the Vegas board, but don't sleep on Yakupov - that's the value bet right now
