I'm not at all high on Valimaki but I'm not adding anything to move Lucic. I think he has actual trade value. His money owed is 875k after his bonus is paid. I think a GM would give him 2M easily as a UFA, potentially more. Why would we add to move him?

I'd add to move Monahan, but Seravelli said there is lots of interest in him. Surprising to me even given the shortage of centers.

I could see him waiving to Arizona for the purposes of a buyout, toss in a 3rd rounder or a B prospect. Costs the Coyotes very little cash and the cap hit goes away almost entirely the first year. Helps them get to the floor while saving 5M. Looch is free then to sign anywhere but Arizona or Calgary for more money than he would have gotten or retire if he prefers.

Buyout to Arizona or any other team doesn't work as that team would have to pay Lucic's $3m signing bonus plus 2/3rds of his $1m salary.

Total of $3.67m in real cash.

That's 1st round pick territory worth of value.

Obviously I meant trading him after his signing bonus was paid.

That's all fine and dandy.

However the only team that can buyout Lucic after his signing bonus is paid is the team that pays the signing bonus.

Calgary can't pay the signing bonus and afterward trade Lucic to a different team who then buys him out.

The Flames need to offload salary. Seems like the Ducks have space and could use some beef to protect their young stars. What would a deal look like? Lucic has one year left with a cap hit of $5.25m but he is only owed $875,000 in actual money. If the Ducks aren't worried about being a cap team this seems like a bargain for what he has brought this year. Assuming Lucic agrees to waive of course.

Slight correction on your math

His salary is 4 mill. 1 mill base with 3 mill signing bonus due on August 1st I think(not sure if is July or August 1)

He sounds like an Arizona special after he gets paid his signing bonus

3M of that 4M is paid on July 1st and then there os the retention from Edmonton as well. So after July 1st Lucic is only owed 1M total for the entire season, and 875k from the team that he is playing for

I mean lucic makes sense for Anaheim

- Short term
- little real money
- higher cap(we’re not going to be near cap so doesn’t bother us much
- should be able to pick up an asset to take him
- heavy weight that can help protect young team

Biggest thing on the value is how many teams want him, and how much cap space is worth…. Which will be dictated by how much interest in lucic + his ntc

Not arguing Anaheim's interest. Was just correcting the statement on how much he is owed in actual money

It's 875K after his bonus is paid out on July 1.

Lucic would be a good addition to a rebuilding team with cap space to spare. He'll add some toughness and veteran presence to the lineup. That being said, no one is trading for him unless Calgary sweetens the deal.

Lucic. Calgary's 2022 1st for Anaheim's 2022 3rd.

Are you sure about that?
I have my doubts
I have never heard this before.

It's because of the timing:

Buyouts are done in June, signing bonuses can't be paid before July. There is a 2nd buyout window in August for teams that have salary arbitration, however they cannot buyout any player who wasn't on their roster since the trade deadline. So it's impossible for Team A to pay the signing bonus and then trade the player to Team B who buys him out that same season.**

**Note it doesn't matter that this 2021-22 season is extended into July. Buyouts will still be treated as if they had occurred in June.

I think you're wrong about that. I think we will get an asset (not a significant one) if he agrees to waive. 875K for what Lucic brings is a sweetheart deal if he agrees to waive for a budget team. He's probably a 2M player.

One thing to consider is, if Calgary is looking to not pay or get an asset back, Lucic probably won't be in the first tier/wave of cap dumps in the sense teams will look to get more assets for marginally useful players or pure cap dumps. Teams may circle back if they need to get to the cap floor or feel he's a fit for the team, but Calgary would have to be patient to get rid of him for positive value. Can the Flames afford to wait? Or will they have too many contracts they'd rather get done early? (Those are honest questions, I haven't been following Calgary, just know they need to free up money like basically every top team).

I could see Lucic getting dealt after his August 1st bonus is paid out. Would he like to go to California again? Stay in the Northwest? Hard to say, I don't know him personally.
