OHL cancels rest of regular season, confirms draft and playoff hopes
“It takes drastic measures with what’s happened here,” London GM Mark Hunter said. “It’s the sacrificing of seasons and we still don’t know what’s going to happen with the playoffs yet. We’ll have to sit back and watch what happens and where it goes with this virus.”
All Knights players have returned to their hometowns except Estonian defenceman Kirill Steklov, who’s en route. The team brass wants them to stay safe, but also keep active in case they are recalled for playoff duty.
“Hunker down, be careful what you do and stay in your house as much as possible,” Hunter said. “There’s not many places to exercise. They’re all closed down, too, but they need to do stuff. You can’t just sit in the house all the time. They need to shoot pucks in the back or the basement.”
London goalie Brett Brochu finished the OHL season with a 2.40 goals against average to win the league’s Dinty Moore Trophy as the rookie netminder with the lowest GAA. Connor McMichael fell three short of the 50-goal milestone and overage ironman centre Jason Willms finished his four-year major junior career (the first three-and-a-half with Barrie) having played in 264 straight regular-season games, never missing one in his tenure.
Now, the wait continues to see if he and everyone else will enjoy a postseason and a shot at the Memorial Cup.
