The US per capita cost of health care is double that of Canada and significantly higher than most countries. I am gobsmacked that a country as advanced, as rich, finds itself with the death rates attributed to this virus. It may well be that some other first world countries are fudging numbers but there is no sign of it. Once the virus catches hold in third world countries with their lack of American wealth and know how I shudder at the death estimates.

When the US healthcare system is structured more for maximization of profit, and not patient outcome, this is the inevitable result.

No healthcare system can rescue a population that eats the worst foods imaginable, foods heavy in seed oil, carbohydrates, and sugar.

To paraphrase Sun Tzu, almost every health battle is won or lost, before you enter the hospital.

Critically ill Covid-19 patients in WNY to start getting new experimental treatment
Critically ill Covid-19 patients at Buffalo hospitals will start receiving an experimental treatment involving an arthritis drug that showed promise bringing some patients back from the brink of death in China. The Food and Drug Administration Wednesday afternoon gave permission to researchers at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center and the University at Buffalo to help lead a clinical trial study of the drug, sarilumab, which they hope will prevent inflammation that chokes off breathing for those on ventilators.

I happen to work for the company that developed and produces this drug.

Other states got off to a faster start? News to me.

NYC dwarfs the rest of the state and they did get off to a slow start. de Blasio is still dragging his feet.
Andrew Cuomo closes all NYC playgrounds to stop coronavirus spread

NY has no reason to be patting itself on the back.
Is coronavirus de Blasio's Katrina?

Slow early response
Why New York is the epicenter of the American coronavirus outbreak - CNN
Cuomo has earned rave reviews for his daily press conferences during the crisis. But both he and de Blasio were slow to aggressively shut schools, events and social gatherings in the early days of the outbreak.

As other school districts closed, New York was criticized for its slow response

The pros and cons of coronavirus school closures, explained

In recent days, school districts across the country have closed in an effort to slow the spread of the virus and keep students, teachers, staff, and families safe. The rate of closures dramatically ramped up in the last week — while around 600 schools had closed as of Tuesday, at least 56,000 had announced closures by Sunday, according to Education Week.

That includes most of the largest school systems in the country, including those in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Miami. But as of Sunday morning, New York City schools were still scheduled to open, even though the city has been hit hard by the virus, with the number of cases expected to reach 1,000 this week.

And a lot of states still haven't taken some of the measures NY has. So, Trump saying NY is slower compared to other states is...weird. States in the south reacted way later, including NC where I am.

No it's not. It's actually quite accurate. California and Washington had some of the first cases of covid and they took action much faster initiating social distancing measures and it's helped alot. Just because some states were even slower to respond doesn't make New York and in particular NYC less culpable. Deblasio dropped the ball and as a result people in NYC are getting absolutely crushed by this.

Cuomo, too. Deblasio wanted to model NY's response off San Francisco after they issued shelter-in-place orders (or he said he did, at least), but Cuomo dragged his feet for a good week or 2 after that.

IIRC deblasio basically said NYC is open for business in early March. And that the Chinatown festival or whatever was still on and everyone should attend. And both Cuomo and deblasio hesitating on making decisions and ceding power to each other, making it look like no one wanted to make the tough calls. And both trading barbs with Trump.

I have friends in Washington. They didn't have any kind of non-essential business lockdown until days after states like PA and NY. I know this because I had an interview last Wednesday with a non-essential business that still had all of their employees in the building.

part of it’s experience. Many of the hurricane states acted faster. South Carolina closed schools march 16 and non Essential state services March 20, despite having far less population density than NYC.

SC does this every fall though, and people are conditioned and react well. The government is also well prepared for fast action, and governor mcmaster regularly pulls the trigger on action well ahead of time.

Eh, Florida and Georgia both have experience with hurricane closures and while schools were sent home, Georgia has been having their own issues (the Albany area is hard-pressed for ICU beds and has been for some time) and of course we know the shenanigans that DeSantis pulled by going full "Jaws" with spring break travel. Individual entities acted - some schools, places like Disney, mostly by burning their hurricane days (think snow days WNYers) to tack onto the front of the state-wide primary school spring breaks. But Florida beaches weren't closed and congregation points like bars shuttered until after university students started showing signs of infection.
