So at this point going into next year we're looking at:
Max Pacioretty-Alex Galchenyuk-Brendan Gallagher
Carr/Hudon-Thomas Plekanec-Sven Andrighetto
David Desharnais-Lars Eller-Mike McCarron
Matteau/De La Rose-Philip Danault-Paul Byron
Mitchell
Nathan Beaulieu-PK Subban
Andrei Markov-Jeff Petry
Alexei Emelin-Greg Pateryn
Barberio/Bartley
Carrey Price
Mike Condon
So the desperate need is at least 1, but ideally 2 top 6F. I'd obviously move DD or Emelin in a heartbeat if we can find a taker.
Lots of work to do as this lineup has not properly been built but there's hope. The problem is too many 3rd and 4th liners.
Plek - 2nd liner on a good team
Patches - 1st line LW based on his goals potential
Gally - 2nd liner on a good team
Eller - very good shutdown 3C
Chucky - 1st line talent both as a LW and C
Andriguetto - 3rd line on a good team
DLR - 4th line at best?
Danault - 4th liner, possibly 3rd at best.
Byron - 4th liner
Mitchell - 4th liner
Matteau - 4th line, 3rd line at best.
Flynn - 4th liner
Carr - possible 3rd liner, but not in a shutdown role
McCarron - eventually 3rd line shutdown role but maybe not next year. One more in the AHL?
Hudon - eventually a 3rd liner?
Desharnais - doesn't seem to fit in anymore but, with MT, we can expect him to be a top 6.
So?
Patches-Chucky-XX
XX-Plek-Gally
Carr (or Hudon)-Eller-Guetto
Matteau-Danault-DLR-Mitchell-Flynn-Byron
McCarron is a wild card. We'll see how he progresses these next 20 games.
For Hudon, why not give him the same audition instead of a guy like Brown?
So Bergevin certainly has lots of work to do to improve the top 6 with little to offer.
