The fact that this means No rutta on the bottom pair is HUGE.

Rutta is for sure going to be playing over Coburn at some point this year and you can quote me on that. Cooper is a very easy coach to understand after all.

I like the signing. Fills our RD need for one more year till Foote gets the call up

I'd honestly try him on all 3 lines and see where he sticks

Hedman - Shattenkirk
or
McDonagh - Shattenkirk (this could lead to a great pairing of Hedman-Cernak
or
Coburn - Shattenkirk
or
Shattenkirk-Shattenkirk

Dont say this....:banghead:
Well it happened in last years playoffs already. And Burner was on rotation during the reg too. Then again as the occasional #6 it doesn’t really matter who we put there (Coburn, Rutta, Schenn, Witko or somebody from the Crunch) as long as we figure out our final top-6 combinations until the playoffs.

This is a fantastic move for this season. We have the money to spend, it's a one year deal, so it's practically no risk with potential for solid upside.

Basically the complete opposite of what Florida did signing Strals for $16.5m over 3 years. He can help that team, but really the absolute best case scenario is that his plus justifies that contract -- and that seems really unlikely.

With Shattenkirk, we could easily get a lot more than we're paying for. And if not, the money's not really wasted, if for no other reason than veteran depth on D.

Like many have said it's low risk, high reward, a good move by us. Training Camp and pre-season will be interesting to see how the pairings will look going into the season.

I hope Rutta is qualified for one more trip to Syracuse. Otherwise, waive him.

I love this signing because it gives us depth to rest and rotate on D while keeping our guys healthy. Schenn and Shatty will make a huge difference when it comes to fresh legs in April and May, something for some reason Cooper hasn't figured out ever.

You aren't wrong, but if he's in a solid #4 position (Heddy/#, McD/Kirk) he'll be fine.

Plus we can finally get Serg off the power play (he 100% does not belong there... YET!) and can give him time to develop.

Kirk gives our 2nd PP unit a true leader to help control everything.

Why should we take Sergachev off the PP in favor of Shattenkirk? Sergachev got 1 minute less last year and had 1 less point. The year before in less PP time on ice he had more PP points. Sergachev needs more PP time not less. Shattenkirk isn't very good on the PP more, he isn't very good in general. He can still skate with the puck and make a pass but Sergachev does both of those things better. Even with Sergachevs struggles defensively he's better than Shattenkirk there too. Shattenkirk isn't even better than Coburn at this point, he can rebound and be but going off of last year Shattenkirk is barely our 6th best, Schenn had a very strong finish to the year. I don't expect much from Shattenkirk and hope he doesn't take top 4 minutes from anyone.

Good deal and still a good player. TB made out good. It’s like a low premium insurance policy that has the potential to pay out some nice dividends.

At 1.75 , i'll take him on the team every day of the week . Low ridk high reward , even more so if he's motivated enough to try to put his terrible seasons with NYR behind him . He will be a perfect fit on a second Dpair , even if he's not the player that he was with St-Louis, at the very least Shattenkirk still have a good shot and his hockey IQ is still there.

Excellent. We are not the Rangers, you can’t look at Shattenkirk and measure his stats in a vacuum without considering the drastic difference in the way we will deploy him, his D partner, the system, and the talent around him.

He has some impressive career puck possession numbers which will shine when he’s passing the puck to Kucherov with a steady defensive partner instead of the train wreck of AHL+ talent he was working with in New York.

Amazing signing.
Counterpoint - he was added to a fairly stacked Caps team and looked like shit. Small sample, but it still stands.

I think his role with us is actually smaller though. He was looked at as about a #3 then. We're looking at him as something like a #6, who can give us some bonus puck-moving on the bottom pair.

Also, defensemen TDL acquisitions often don't work out well, particularly the offensively inclined ones.

But really, it's about expectations. We likely didn't just acquire a 40 point defenseman for peanuts. But hopefully we got a guy who can move the puck to out forwards with speed when games get tough, and maybe put up 25 ES points while playing sheltered minutes. (I know he's primarily a PP specialist, but that doesn't mean he can't be an above average 5v5 PMD.)

Finally, our entire left side is built of babysitters. We can afford to take a risk on his poor defensive abilities.

Plus he gives us blue line offensive pressure which frees our wingers up to skate unlike Girardi and Stralman who looked old, slow, and injured last year because they were.

Counter counterpoint - he still put up impressive offensive numbers despite being in a new system. His shortcomings are something we can hide very well, because we can pair him with several guys who play well away from the puck.
