Canes are 3-0 after playing teams that had 96, 105, and 128 points last year and have won without a single goal from any forward in the top six (counting either Dzingel or McGinn as top 6).

The general stat is incredibly impressive and doesn’t lose its impact with this comment, but boy does it seem wrong to count McGinn as top 6 and Haula as bottom 6.

Tampa is a very good team. They’re not perfect, but they have a way of surviving their deficiencies and just absolutely murdering you when they get rolling.

Realistically we’re not on this level. If we’re going to get our **** pushed in a certain number of times in a given season, doing it against a team like TB on a B2B after a big road win in early October is probably not the worst way to do it. Take the reality check, score some positives out of this game, and move on.

I just wanted to bring this back. I agreed with this post. I liked this post.

Clearly, the team neither agreed with nor liked this post.

That was simply overwhelming. And to be that overwhelming on the back end of a B2B and the third game in 4 nights is especially impressive.

Fair enough, I don’t mind being wrong on something like that.

Tampa fans are rightfully pissed at the way they performed after the halfway mark of that game. They pulled the hockey equivalent of having the secondary stand in the end zone while the other team marches the ball down the field, except they started doing it in the third quarter. That team won a lot of games last year where they got perforated defensively, survived on a few big saves, and then routed the opponent in transition. Last night’s game was building up to that, and they just stopped, treating a 1-goal lead in the second period like it was a 1-goal lead in the third.

Fortunately for us:
1) Our defense is mobile enough to open it up against a team like TB without getting completely roasted, which got us back in the game. To some extent this was true last year, but Faulk in particular isn’t built for that. Gardiner and Edmondson give us a little bit extra step in both directions.

2) The PP looked obscenely good against Tampa’s PK setup. They didn’t begin to pressure the puck until the last PP, which was just crazy to watch. We probably won’t run at a 33% rate all season, but at least in the early going we have a PP good enough to take what the other team is offering it.

IMO this was the clearest case to date of RBA out-coaching his counterpart. Cooper played it way too close to the vest and Rod played it like a guy trying to win.

But you weren't wrong after the first, and that was my point. You are still right that this was a very rough schedule spot against a great team.

I understand where Cooper's head was at; he thought the Canes were gassed and they jumped on Carolina with 3 goals on some truly bad plays by Carolina. "Hang back and capitalize on their mistakes" wasn't a bad idea given the clearing gaffes in the first. But without the same level of pressure on the forecheck, the gaffes didn't happen.

Honestly I think if they just kept skating with us they’d have extended their lead eventually. They didn’t get shots early in the 2nd, but they were getting odd-man rushes every other time up the ice. That was only going to last so long for us before it was a 5-2 game.

I'm not sure how true this is.

I mean, it's probably true in part, but I think it's just as likely that the Bolts got the two-goal lead and tried to hang back because *they* wanted to preserve an easy win, not necessarily because the coach did -- and then when the Canes kept coming, they couldn't find their way back into the game. Remember: that was a one-goal game from midway through the second, and it was a tie game for the last 7 minutes. They obviously weren't just "hanging on for a win" when they were tied for those last 7 minutes -- they just couldn't.

I think conditioning plays a big part here. The Canes never, ever, ever give up, and they never, ever stop. They come in waves, and now they're built to roll four dangerous lines all game long. I think TBL just ran out of gas.

That’s the only concerning part of our early streak. I’m not convinced we’ve played all that well yet, the other teams havent capitalized much against us. As the good teams start gelling that’s unlikely to maintain itself. We’ll have to improve with them.

Just keep reminding yourselves that the Bolts had 2 shots total after the 1st.

I think they did lay back in the beginning of the 2nd thinking they could hold a 2 goal lead but we turned it on and absolutely dominated them.

I'm not sure I agree. We haven't made that many mistakes, and we've been punished for the ones we've made. Happened in both the Washington and Tampa games.

We will improve. None of our top 6 forwards have even scored yet.
