I do appreciate that Marner hasn't received a single vote so far.

I think Marleau is as good as gone, same with Brown, and Dubas will make an effort to find Zaitsev a home. He's a lot less likely, it will need to be a deal that helps our team with more than just cap space. Even if he goes, we need someone who can play his minutes and have his impact in the defensive end. It would really suck to pay to get rid of him and then pay again to get a replacement.

Brown goes for a late 2nd or early 3rd. Marleau goes with Timashov for an LTIR player like Eaves.

Kadri only gets moved if we're re-jigging the team and we're getting a very good RHD back. We can thank ol' Lou for signing Nelson to a $6m contract which makes Kadri and his 30g upside even more valuable. I think we keep Kadri at the end of the day, but we can get a very nice piece if we move him in a hockey deal.

I think we keep Kappy and AJ, that's the entire point of getting Marleau off the books.

The way Leafs play, chances are they won't be successful in the playoffs until maybe Morgan Rielly is the oldest player on the club.
So anyone older then him, is just a wasted asset at this point. There's no use holding on to the type of players who respect the
opposition when the team is much too young and brash.

Marleau, Brown and Zaitsev are gone.

Kapanen, Johnsson and Marner all re-sign.

Kadri Trade talk is Lol worthy. Dubas knows not to trade a player in his 20's whos value is low. He'll build his value back up again next year.

Top 4 RHD comes in, potentially Martinez.
I don't think that anyone is suggesting that he sells low. Other GMs are also capable of looking at his body of work over the last few years and only if one of them offers something fair do I think that he'll be traded.

I assumed it was who we wanted to see traded type question. There can be no leaf fan that wants to trade marner, it may become necessary but no one wants it to happen

Why though? Blow our center depth up? Why would dubas do that?

If we can fit under the cap by moving Zaitsev and marleau, thus leaving room to sign a cheaper RHD, and sign Marner, Johnsson and Kapanen, why wouldn't we keep Kadri?

What's the point in trading Kadri? Just for fun?

I'm not sold yet either. he wants to go back to the West coast. Does that mean only Ducks /Sharks or Kings, maybe Canucks?. Do any of these teams have any interest in him. Sharks have a ton of cap space but a ton of UFAs and RFAs to resign- can they afford to blow 6.25 or a lower retention number on marlea? ducks and Kings are rebuilding and don't need him but will take him if you throw in a nice young asset.

Marleau problem is a long way from solved

I have no idea where his family is located or where his wife is from but you can add in Phoenix and Las Vegas. Both are closer to LA than San Jose (for example).

Interesting if LeBruns idea of Zaitsev+Kappanen for Pesce/Hamilton happens, and Avery somehow is correct.

Reilly Trouba
Muzzin Hamilton/Pesce

Would go from a weak D core to impressive as hell.
Depletes our C depth a TON and hurts RW depth but id 100% be down.

Maybe something like...
AJ Matthews ???(Bracco? Brown?)
Hyman Tavares Marner
Moore Nylander Mikhevey
Marchment Engval Korshkov

I think that it is likely that Marleau, Zaitsev, Brown Kadri, Johnsson and Kapanen are all gone (95+% for each of the first three - 80% for each of the last 3).

I think that it is also possible that Marner gets traded or accepts an offer sheet. Not likely (15%), but possible.

And Liljegren, I don't like it, but I think it is likely (75%) he is traded to ensure a deal a deal for top-4 RHD goes through.

For instance: Kadri and Liljegren for someone like Trouba (signed) or Manson.

For cap restructuring it actually makes sense that many contracts are moved out simultaneously.

1) Move out an RFA forward to avoid re-signing them, allocating money to upgrade or maintain a weaker position (defense).

2) Move out Zaitsev and Marleau partially to pay for Marner.

3) Move Kadri for an upgrade on defense or to get more cost controlled assets.

4) Blend in rookies from the AHL and European signings.

5) Depth signings.

So it might end up looking like:

OUT

Kadri, Marleau, Johnsson, Zaitsev, Gardiner, Hainsey, Sparks

IN

Pesce, Trouba, Cecei, Bracco, Korshkov/Mikheyev, Ferland (example), Ryan Miller (G)

A nice get for sure but Trouba has no term and wants to get paid. They could not afford to resign him if they acquired him. Adding Pesce and maybe Tanev is more doable as long as you have some kind back up for Tanev's injuries and his deal expires in time for the X draft.

I think Marleau, Zaitsev, and Kadri are goners.

I could see Brown staying since the cap might not be an issue.

There's really nobody out there to sign. Realistically, anyone that we acquire and expect to play top 4 RHD is going to have to be acquired via trade.

Prefer to trade Kap or AJ? Fine. If someone out there is looking for a 2C though and not a young winger, it would have to be looked at. He's far from untouchable.

It would obviously be one of many deals. I'm not suggesting leaving the C depth as is.

Phoenix yes, vegas no their cap situation is worse than the leafs. Only took them 1 year to get to the finals and 2 years to mess up their cap situation. Things move fast in vegas.

I am hoping we are looking at a restructure of the team to turn it from a top 9 to more of a top 6. Use a strong asset like Kadri who we cannot utilize to his max to strengthen and area of need on the back end. Push more ice time to your top 6 instead spreading the minutes. Fill the bottom 6 with strong fore-checking players like Moore and Kapanen. There were times where I felt our forward depth was more of a hindrance, since we tried to give minutes to players who should be playing higher in the line up than we could put them. Trade down the bottom 6, to trade up the back end.

Vegas has pretty much everyone locked up long term, though. They aren't strapped for space with some key pieces still left to sign like us.

Vegas is $125K over the cap right now with William Karlsson and Malcolm Subban still to sign.

Wow, that's a good high-end crop of RHD there . . . and then it drops right off.
Myers or Girardi or McQuaid would be an excellent fit with the Leafs, I think.

Marleau seems to be gone, despite the weird bonus salary structure and difficult contract.
Zaits is definitely gone, as reported.

Don't see any wingers from our lineup being traded . . . Toronto's lineup needs Brown to score 20 goals again, needs Kappy to score 25 - 35 goals. Anything added will be gritty.
