Lars Eller, in his 10th year as a NHL player, throws shade at a 3rd year player whom has a possibility, albeit a small one, to pass him in career goals by the end of the season.

That's what I don't understand. Eller is the epitome of a mediocre, dime-a-dozen player, but some of his comments about other teams (like when he called the Oilers a junior team) seem to suggest that he thinks he's a lynchpin in Washington.

I'm not a Marchand fan at all, and I think he was an idiot in that exchange as well, but Eller essentially requested the beating that he got by antagonizing the Boston players while Washington was up 7-0. I don't think he's the sharpest tool in the shed.

He took a shot at the Leafs because he was mad he lost. Sure he is free to do it, but it reeks of pettiness and sour grapes.

Just as he is free to say what he wants, everyone else is free to criticize him.

This is a fair response, but most of the posts aren't really criticisms, they're just coming off as hypersensitive insults. Eller didn't say anything negative about the Leafs or any of their players, yet some people are twisting Eller's mild comments into 'shots'. Seems like a silly overreaction, IMO.
