Weal sounds like a rich man's Akeson.
With more edge and more skill.
Still marginal unless he can make the 3rd line work, but he provides competition for Cousins in that role.

This just doesn't sound right. He forfeits the contract if he retires.

But if he retires after June 1st, he is due a $500,000 bonus, and as the Flyers are retaining 50% of all future payments, they will be on the hook for $250,000 of that bonus.

I thought there was some stipulation that you couldn't retain on bonus payments or something. That's why the Clarkson contract was so bad and thought to be unmoveable. Toronto basically couldn't retain anything because most of his contract is through bonus payments. Unless I am not remembering correctly.

Anyways, regarding Vinny, I thought the source that mentioned this Vinny bonus payment said we would be on the hook for $500000 for the cap. Can't remember for sure though.

Bonus payments can't be bought out, which makes a Clarkson buyout pointless. That's why his contract is so bad. For comparison:

MacDonald buyout June 2016 - four years left at $5m: Total cap penalty of $12,916,664
2016-17 $2,020,833
2017-18 $1,520,833
2018-19 $1,270,833
2019-20 $1,020,833
2020-21 $1,770,833
2021-22 $1,770,833
2022-23 $1,770,833
2023-24 $1,770,833

Clarkson buyout June 2016 - four years left at $5.25m: Total cap penalty of $19,000,000
2016-17 $3,750,000
2017-18 $3,750,000
2018-19 $4,750,000
2019-20 $4,750,000
2020-21 $500,000
2021-22 $500,000
2022-23 $500,000
2023-24 $500,000

Ah right that's what it is. Thanks for the correction.

Edit: I see that Seravalli wrote an article today that mentioned this topic. It said Vinny is going to get the bonus no matter what, but there will not be a cap hit of $2.25mil. I hate to quote anything from Seravalli but here it is anyways.

So it sounds like the Flyers and Kings will have a $250,000 cap hit for Vinny for the 16-17 cap year.

Seems like since it's an unconditional bonus we won't have it on our cap. Regardless if he retired, quit, or whatever we were paying that bonus if not traded. It seems like we are off the hook for any type of money Vinny is owed. That's how I took it at least.

You might be right. Either way, losing Vinny makes the coming offseason much more appealing.

This assumes that he retires after June 1. That would pretty much mean the Kings would be in the SCF (or close to it). If they lose in the first round and he retires immediately following the series, this wouldn't be an issue, correct? Why he would do that, I'm not sure...I'd definitely wait until June 1 to do it, unless that was part of the deal to move him.

Lecavalier has won 11 out of 12 face offs tonight through two periods against the Red Wings. I don't have any ill will for him, but you could tell during his first game with the Kings that he really wanted to win the face offs. I never saw the same desperation from him here. He probably would've found a spot in the line up if he could've been the same face off guy that he was in Tampa, but he was terrible here.

Finished at 81% and played 15 minutes.

Seems to be playing well with them. Good trade for both teams.

Luke played 21 minutes.

If Vinny actually plays well, despite how low that probably is, it could be extremely bad for the Flyers if he doesn't retire and the Kings don't want him to. We should wish him well, but hope he sucks.

Yeah, as a Flyer he went 297-349 (46%) on faceoffs.

Good for him. On the same line though, this wouldnt be the first nor last time a player was traded and looked good the first few games with a team.

Yup...it's in the back of my mind as well. Oh well, worst case, we cleared up half his cap hit which was still not expected at any point.

I'm assuming that were an agreement that this trade only happens if he retires, so I wouldn't expect that to happen. LA has been embroiled in enough controversy these past few years..

I was expecting him to play well the first few games before crashing back down to earth.

I don't really think it would be that bad for the Flyers. Obviously worse than if he retires, but we were anticipating a buyout or the possibility of at least one more year at full cap hit before a buyout. I think the difference between the buyout and the retention is actually more if he were bought out. In other words...this is a win-win for the Flyers. He retires, the cap hit is gone 100%. He stays and plays, the the cap hit is less than it would be if he were to stay here and get a full cap hit, and is also less than if he was bought out (plus we don't have the two extra years of ~$1 million).
