In game 1 his play without the puck was solid, he was winning battles and looked to be working pretty tirelessly in his own end. I think to expect too much from him offensively right now would be unfair if he is going to be playing with the guys he’s currently playing with. I feel like I would somewhat worry about his confidence if they can’t find another winger for him to play with that can produce even a little bit

Wright’s upside is as a thoroughly dominant 2-way player.

But as is often the case, highly touted players who enter the CHL from thoroughly dominant minor midget teams often have difficulty adjusting to playing without the puck at the major junior level.

Wright’s minor midget AAA club lost once in 84 games. The club’s average per-game goal differential was an astonishing 4.17 — the next best team was 2.29. The club played some games where they did not surrender ANY shots on goal.

This wasn’t an aberration. The team performed at a similar level of nearly farcical dominance for years, finishing as the #1 ranked 03 AAA team since at least major peewee, which is as far back as the ranking websites go.

Back in the Spring, just prior to the priority selection draft, someone I respect asked me to evaluate Shane Wright’s defensive game. My answer was simple and honest: I have no idea, and anyone who claims to know the answer is giving you a personal projection instead of an evidence-based evaluation. More often than not, the Zamboni only needed to resurface half of the ice sheet. God help the scout trying to get a read on the team’s goaltenders. Watch the warmup, would have been my advice.

So be patient, Frontenacs fans. You have a player who will not be 16 for another 3 months and for the first time in his hockey-playing life is getting acquainted with the south end of the rink and playing huge stretches where the opponent has control of the puck. Most observers believe that Wright has the tools and the mind needed to fairly quickly figure out how defence drives offence at the CHL and higher levels, but experience will be his best teacher and it won’t always be pretty to watch.

But then again, the process of making sausages isn’t pretty to watch, but most people like the end result.

Thanks for the breakdown.

As I said, it's only limited viewings and it's very, very early in the season. I was just curious what kind of talent he was supposed to have because in the (very) limited stuff I saw, I didn't see the same kind of overly obvious ability that previous exceptional players like Tavares or McDavid showed even from the get-go. So I wasn't sure if he was supposed to be that good, or a tier or two below.

That's the difficulty in assessing talent from dominant minor hockey teams. Wright's Don Mills team lost once last year and only 14 times in total in the last 3 years. My son played against that team 8 times last year and I can't say that Wright was/is better than 3 or 4 other players from that team (including Othman and Clarke). But he more than held his own as an '04. He was a very early 04 though, not much younger than a lot of the 03s. The steal of the draft was Clarke, i thought he was the best 03 in the province last year. And as far as 04s who played up go, Fantilli impressed me a bit more, and he's so young he was almost an 05.

No matter how you look at players on this team none of them came from teams that were in the condition that this team is. In order to have the stats to get drafted, you have to play on competitive teams.

Most of these kids get noticed for their offense. As with wright now they have to learn what to do without the puck and how to backcheck.

Yes,Wright is a good player and he should develop BUT do not think that anyone on this team is going to be the saviour of the team.

Great game tonight, didn't need to go to OT but Tynan was unreal and kept them in it. Wright looks as advertised, already their best forward.

Wasn't a fan of the reffing, especially with the questionable calls after the borderline boarding Callens hit that result in several Ice Dogs jumping him. Peric got spanked in the subsequent brawl and got tossed, but somehow was announced as getting an assist on Wright's OT goal.

Overall easily their best game, the Wisdom/Wright/Pinchuk line looks very good.

Billy Constantinou dealt to Sault Ste. Marie for a very modest return. Two 4th round picks and a distant 3rd in 2024.

I'm not sure that I understand the timing for the Frontenacs. He was the centrepiece of the Robertson deal less than a year ago and was off to a solid start.

Am surprised at the return. He was not off to a solid start though. He has been a turnover machine this season and started on the 1st pair but was bumped down to 2nd pair and was taken off the 1st PP unit already. When looking at KGN's roster, to be demoted like that is extremely telling of his play thus far. Not like they're overflowing with guys who can play top 2 pair and PP1 time

Thanks for the clarification. I was only commenting on his impressive number of points for a low scoring team.

Hopefully a new start with a team that emphasizes skating and passing more than his previous teams can help him play to his strengths.

Just back from the game, no real comments other than Braden Haché barely played after the first, and Jacob Murray doesn't deserve a top 4 spot, so many awful turnovers and bad defensive plays, if he wasn't a former first rounder and alternate captain play-wise he deserves to be in the press box

Wasn't able to watch, have read it was Dawson Baker. No idea on his current status, but if he does play on Friday I feel like he'll be out for blood.

Where's the best place to park for a game in KGN?
Across the street in the city lot but get there early - I think it is only $7. There are a couple of city lots about 1 block over - same price.

Edit - looking for a place to eat "The Merchant" is only 1 block over and I think it is one of the best places in the downtown core.

This lot I believe is 5 bucks and there's usually always spots - I haven't parked there in a couple years since I moved to a walkable distance but I can't imagine it's changed.

Looking at your roster on the OHL site I see 8 players that are going to be OA next year is that right. It seems like a lot for a team that is rebuilding.

You were looking at the wrong year. 2000 born is an OA next year so Baker, Pringle and Gordon are their only 3 potential OA’s. They have 8 skater 2001’s (now 9 after claiming Dustin Hutton)
