What we do in hockey echoes in eternity...
I think an average salary of 6-6.5 million per season is more than reasonable if Kessel is signed to a maximum term.
8.5m cash average per year (not cap hit)over 8 year contract.
The most recent comparables would be Parise/Suter at 10m cash per season(not cap hit) for the first 8 years .
Weber 11.5m cash per year(not cap) for his first 8 years.
Cap is what the team cares about, the cash is what the agent and player care about.
Just like Aki finished Aki's (NHL) career with the Leafs. Only difference b/t Aki and Kessel is Aki led the Leafs to the playoffs on several occasions (some would say carried on Aki's back), while Kessel has yet to accomplish this feat.
If he's getting an average of $8.5M over 8 years, then his cap hit is $8.5M. That's precisely what cap hit is. It's the average money made per year of the contract.
Good Gods.... Please be kidding...
Probably around $7 million per. $8.5 million per is a bit much.
I agree, Kessel's a great support add, but he's just shy of a franchise player, 8.5 is what I would reserve for paying a player of this ilk, I would not go over 7M per for Kessel, I would prefer 6.5 over 8, with wiggle room to 7M.

kidding about what?
if you don't like the facts...you need to turn away. Or order a #8 jersey. either way is good with this poster.
Really? Aki Berg. Borje Salming yes. He was a great player. Aki Berg was not a difference maker. He would be more comparable to Inga Hammerstrom.
Lucic's cap hit is 6mil. Are you saying Kessel does more to help a team win than Lucic? Kessel should be traded for future assets, unless his cap hit is more around 5.5mil. or less.

How many times have the Leafs made the playoffs without Aki?
Difference makers get their teams to the playoffs. Aki was (and still is) a difference maker.
Yup thats about what i would offer also.
But that ain't what they are gonna demand on the open market.
I think it's ridiculous that you would actually believe this so therefore you must be trolling. The only thing Aki carried on his back was a hunch while he coasted on the coat tales of his veteran teammates.
If what you say was true he would have found employment NHL after his Leaf years but hey, don't let that stop you. Carry on if you will.

Last year Phil Kessel had 6 Game Winning Goals and Milan Lucic had 1.

Phil Kessel should be offered 1 Million dollars for every playoff goal he's scored in his Leaf Career.
haha Aki could always find employment in the NHL. Aki left to go home to spend time with Aki's family while at the same time dominating the Finnish Elite League.
Kessel may get the points, but Aki got the wins, and the glory.

I agree that Lucic is a more valuable player to a team, but Kessel is a very good player too, just different. He is worth 5.5 as a cap hit. Then his cost to value ratio makes sense. Kessel can create space for other players by using his speed, and thus, forcing the D to back up too quickly, leaving a big gap for his teammates to fill. This ability to force open ice is one thing Kessel does beyond only scoring goals.
