Karlsson will still get his money, even if he has a down year. At least a few teams will look at his career over one season, and one of them will pay up.

Let's not get carried away after 14 games on a new team.

Remember two years ago when Kopitar scored 12 goals and 52 points in 76 games and everyone thought his days of superstardom were done? Or when Giroux scored 58 points in 82 games and everyone said he would never recover from all those injuries?

Since those down-year seasons:
Kopitar: 98 points in 95 games
Giroux: 119 points in 97 games

He'll get money, but will he get 8 years at 11 million? Not if he wants to play on a contender because who has room realistically, and I think a lot has to do with how this season goes.

I agree that he'll get paid, no doubt, but he could very well have already turned down the biggest deal he'll be offered. In the end what's a few million dollars on dozens of millions though, especially when you have a shot to win the cup as well.

curious to know if it makes sense to extrapolate +/- over a whole season? ie. Karlsson, Erik: 14GP -9, 82GP -52

As I posted in another thread, 8 years at 11 million dollars isn't the same in every city.

For example, Karlsson could sign for 7 years for 65 million in Tampa and take home the same amount after taxes as he would with the Ottawa offer.

Take a look at these two scenarios:

Option 1:
• Karlsson signs the 8 year $88 million contract in Ottawa. His take home on that deal would be $41,190,000.
• At 37, Karlsson then signs his retirement contract in Ottawa for 2 years and 12 million dollars. His take home on that deal would be about 6.7 million.
• Over 10 years in Ottawa before he retires at 39, Karlsson would make about 48 million dollars after taxes.

Option 2:
• Karlsson signs a 7 year $66.5 million contract in Tampa (9.5 AAV). His take home on that deal would be $42,135,000.
• At 36, Karlsson then signs his retirement contract in Tampa for 3 years and 18 million dollars. His take home on that deal would be about 11.4 million.
• Over 10 years in Tampa before he retires at 39, Karlsson would make about 53.5 million dollars after taxes.

And that doesn't even factor in contract structure.

While on paper it might end up looking like Karlsson turned down a bigger deal, in real money, he most likely didn't.

In 5 years? possibly

Karlsson has had 2 major injuries (achilles, broken foot)
Did the poster mention 5 years and I just missed it?

Think how amazing it would be to have the best pairing in the NHL or have one of them on the ice virtually all game... #Melnykout

I agree that Karlsson will get his money, one way or another. He just might not have the option to pick any team in the league to give it to him anymore, if he truly does have an awful season.

You also do have to consider that unlike Giroux and Kopitar, there are some serious injuries that you have to put in between vintage Karlsson and the current version of him.

"Will he ever get back to his former level"? is still a valid question that has yet to be answered. I think he will, but its not without its own level of risk by banking on that to happen.

Contenders have cap flexibility in the off season. The idea they don't is laughable. Look at the teams in on Tavares, a big chunk were strong teams or contenders. Pittsburgh could sign Karl at 11M and make it work if they wanted to. There are very few teams who couldn't make it work at 11M.

Anybody who thinks he's not getting more than Ottawa offered is ignoring any historical context for UFA signings. They all mostly get overpaid, and the big ones get offered contracts front loaded with all bonuses. The investment opportunity from getting all that money up front will easily make any 7 year deal for Karlsson more lucrative than the 8 year deal without bonuses that OTT supposedly offered.

Honestly can't even understand why there's a salary cap when Ottawa is one of the 3 highest taxed cities to play in? Why would a free agent ever choose to sign here? When you could make sooo much more playing somewhere like Florida, Nashville, Tampa or any of the other low tax cities. Not to mention the weather, lifestyle, etc.

Ottawa will never be a premier UFA destination for those reasons.

What we have to do is draft/develop top end players and have them set down roots here so that when their contract is up, they want to stay here with their families.

Like what we did with Karlsson, except next time, let's not trade him.
