Does Melnyk offer EK the same (or better) contract that Due Doughty just agreed to with the Kings?

Posted this in the trade thread, but according to a source of Chris Stevenson of the Athletic, the offer will be 8 years 10M per season with some wiggle room. Doesn't mention anything about signing bonuses, trade protection, or contract structure, which are all factors that can dramatically change the overall appeal of a contract.

Why signing Erik Karlsson to a contract extension, sadly,...

Perfect, add an extra million a year and cut some corners elsewhere to make it work *cough* Zack Smith *cough*

IMO Tavares to Leafs changes things. Karlsson wants to win and without a first next year he might want out from this division. If we had a first I can understand us sucking for another year and getting another top line prospect asset. But this is difficult.

If true, then this has been nothing but a PR move from the beginning, as most expected.

Find out what the market is and then go under it by enough to make sure it's not acceptable, but can be presented as "reasonable" to the casual fan.

Don't know how things will unfold.

Even though there has been no reports of it, but we have to assume that EK65 and PD have exchanged their contract expectation positions to each other, and have either come to an agreement, or not.

With Doughty signing today, as per the reports, this may have impacted any understanding EK65 and PD had up until those reports of 11 Million for 8 years.

We have to assume there was (or will be) an initial offer, lower than what PD is prepared to rise to, and vice versa for EK65 and his agent.

Question is whether or not EK is willing to take the same as Doughty, IF that is PDs ceiling, or expects more.

Buckle up and prepare for the Dorion PR spin which will likely look eerily similar to the Turris spin.

I honestly dont think Karlsson gives two f***s if we have a 1st in 2019 or not.

Without the structure of a lockout proof bonus laden deal, then 10M per isn't remotely close to being a fair deal with the now firmly established market price.

The Sens will present it as such, but only the gullible will believe the shills.

It changes nothing wrt the Senators. The first round pick in 2019 likely would not play for the Senators until 2020 or later. They will not pay $11m and will offer less. Karlsson wil submit a $12m + offer. The Senators will state they might have paid $11m if Karlsson offered that but he did not. So a trade had to be made. A la the Turris trade.

Just like in life, if you are poor then you cannot have the nicest things.

There’s no reason for him to not be either signed or traded today.

I’m getting pissed off. Such an inept organization.

Day isn't over, and Ottawa didn't sign a jabronie UFA who is a complete waste on ice.

Hoping that means Pierre is busy looking for change underneath Melnyk's cushion to make an offer to Karlsson. But Melnyk carries all his quarters in his fanny pack.

Happy Canada Day everyone!
