No one cares
Karl Alzner will probably be back stronger than ever next year. He is probably working with a skating coach this offseason and he will be ready.

I attempted to buy out Alzner on capfriendly. It will take 6 years before his buyout doesn't affect the cap no more and I think the second year the cap hit will be more than just burying him. I don't think the Habs will buy him out, they will probably keep him around for another year and then try to move him with 2 years left or buy him out then. So we can expect Alzner to be back next year, probably seeing him pass through waivers again unless some team decides to pick him up which I highly doubt. On the contrary, Weise probably will get bought out.

Wait. Mete makes 4 mill a year? LOL

Not my estimate, I was just showing how it fits to the other poster who said we only had $3M in cap space. I don't think Mete makes $4M either. This further helps my case that we do have $8M in cap space moving forward

The better time to buy him out is before the Expansion draft. The cap hit's are minimal for 2 seasons.

I think a bridge is less than that. If he wants to go long-term than somewhere between 4.5 and 5 million for 4-6 years. I think Jonis Brodin is a great comparable. He signed an 6 year deal at just over 4 million per. Bridge deal is probably 2 years at like 3 or 3.5.

I tend to agree. The $4M came from you right? I didn't argue it too much cause the point was fluffing up cap hits on several players we have to sign to see what cap space we actually have moving forward.

I did say 4. But once I compared to Brodin and adjusted up for cap inflation I realized it was probably closer to 4.5 or 5 on a longer term deal.

Well we are going to need to trade some forwards. We already have 12 forwards signed with Armia and Lehkonen to go.....then you have Poeling as a possible starter....and Hudon not sure what happens to him and Weise that one makes no sense now....cant see us signing a forward as UFA. We basically have Weise, Delaurier, Hudon, and Peca to dump......problem is no one will want them.
Alzner and Weise you buy out frees up 5.3 million in cap space.

Alzner doesn't free up anything this year by buying him out. Check out capfriendly's buyout calculator.

Note, just by sending them to the minors Weisse is about 1.5 against the cap and Alzner 3.6. Alzner alone is 4 million against the cap if you buy him out, and Weise 833k - plus you double the number of remaining years they count against the cap.

Yeah you absolutely cannot buy out Alzner until 2021.

I'm really not sure about your calculations, I think you might be confusing real dollar payouts VS Cap penalties.

There's no point buying him out in 2019 or 2020 because of that 2020-21 buyout cap hit of either $3.9m or $4.1m. You get more cap savings by burying him in the minors for that season. For 2019-20, we don't really need the cap hit savings unless MB goes crazy in free agency.

Plus, there should be another column next to "initial cap hit" called "cap hit if not bought out but plays in Laval." That cap hit is about 1 million cheaper that the initial cap hit - so it makes even less sense to buy him out. I'd rather just have the contract end as soon as possible - unless we foresee desperately needing the money in a pending UFA market. It's too bad buyouts can't happen after we see what we were able to attract in the UFA market.

D in Laval looks to be shaping up well IMO... Where would you fit the rookie Walford? Bump down Olofsson and Sklenicka and not sign Ouellet? Is it smart to sign him to ELC and play him ECHL where he takes up a NHL contract?

Leskinen / Brook
Alzner / Fleury
Olofsson / Lernout

Sklenicka, Ouellet,
Alzer is getting bought out or moved somehow...he's not going to be in Laval this coming year.

How sure are you on that one? Buyout for Alzner don't save that much cap space this season vs having him in Laval and he is not a team distraction.

I don't see a buyout as a viable option. What's the rush to buy him out? (Unless we land a big fish) Alzner has been a good soldier for us but this is a business. He can continue riding busses in Laval.

yeah if you read a couple of earlier posts or merely do the calculation on capfriendly (which i randomly did today, freaked out, went to this thread, and people are already on top of it lol)

Makes 0 sense to buy him out this year

bergevin f***ed up royally with that out of nowhere base salary of 1.5 for next year trying to "lower the overall caphit" lmao, in doing so f***ed him over for the buyout

So buyout is no bueno at the moment but it would be nice to "move" him for sure....whoever wants that player....and contract...

He’s not getting bought out this year. Makes zero sense to.

Trading him is the only option. Limited but the only one.

I must be missing something...what's the purpose of buying him out? Are we in cap hell?

Keep him on the books, makes no sense in buying him out for the sake of buying him out.
