Poohs been paying great recently. If anything i would reward him with some time on the 2nd pair with dumo.

except Daley has been great too, and don't Pooh and Dumo both play on the left?

But I agree not to sit him.

Yeah i agree. It seems like for the time being the d line-up will stay as is. Everyone is mostly playing too good to benched so the only way I can see schultz getting a game is if we run with 7D

It's tough. I really want to see Schultz play, but our top 4 is currently solidified with Letang, Dumo, Daley (who has been excellent and is truly fulfilling a top 4 guy), and Maatta (who has been just up-and-down but handling big minutes pretty well despite some deficiencies). That leaves the bottom-pairing, but Pouliot has been very good since his call up, and being that he's our top D prospect and is looking NHL ready, he needs minutes.

Really the only spot he can go is in Cole's, since he's an RD anyway, but Cole seems to have learned from his benching, and is playing solid with Pouliot. Plus Pouliot+Schultz seems like a potential defensive liability, even though Pooh has been playing defensively sound.

That's why I like the idea of going 7D. You can try Pooh and Schultz a few times and see if it looks like a complete disaster or not without committing to it for a whole game or messing up the top 4.

So then the line-up will be :

hags-sid-horny

earnitz-geno-kessel

Wilson-bonino-rust

Kuhn-cullen-archibald

(If sullivan doesnt ignore the effect of the line change during the rangers)

I agree with Sullivan that I wouldn't touch what is currently working, and I like having 7 defensemen. That gives motivation to everyone that you have to perform to play. If Schultz is performing in practice, and Cole isn't, Cole sits and Schultz plays. If Cole is performing in practice and Pouliot isn't, Pouliot sits and Cole plays. Friendly internal competition is always how a coach gets the most out of his players.

We have been lacking hunger in this lineup for years because Shero was giving bad contracts to veterans. Seeing guys in the bottom 6 fighting for their lives, and having enough NHL defensemen to create some competition is a welcomed change in how we've been doing things here.

Agreed. Now if only someone told Sullivan that competition is allowed to go beyond guys making less than 2 million a year.

So if I'm Shultz and.wont be getting a qualifying offer anyways, why do I sign here as a ufa?

Because they were the team that actually gave something up for him so who knows how many other teams would actually be interested and they're fairly committed to rehabbing him. Plus this team is actually good with defensemen. It's probably one of the best situations he could have hoped to land in if he wants to have a NHL career in the future, even if the Pens are liable to screw up along the way.

I miss the old days when new guy initiation involved Tom Barrasso ****ing your wife.

Ah yes. A tradition carried on for a time by the mystical taters. Never met a wife he didn't like.

If it's anything like the Clendening project, they'll almost never play him then send him out the door.

To be fair, most of Schultz's faults are fixable, or at least coachable to the point where his other skills can shine through.

Clendening's skating basically limited his ceiling to a PP specialist, regardless of what a coach could do for his game. Clendening is one of few guys out there that can make Määttä look like a smooth skater.
