No, solidly.

Although both NY + CHI presumably have deep enough pockets to get thru the next 2 yrs, cap hit is a big deal.
STRUCTURAL cap where large salaries make flexibility all the more difficult and even if Black Hawks eat half, that is still 5m for extensive term.
That alone = no.

Second is return; understandably they would still want something signif even w/major retention, We are NOT moving any of our elite elcs for an older, pricier vet.

Third, even with substitution to bypass this, it still doesn't work. In other words, if Toews came at half and the exchange was something like Trouba full pop, then even w/w'out Strome as a legit add or Smith as a cap dump, NY still winds up keeping signif salary. NO we do not want this.

Tho we may not concur on every point, I believe @cwede and I are in agreement that this is a yr for us to move vets as much as makes sense so our new emerging core can get max mins and be ready to kick ass following season. As a rule adding vets is counterproductive to this.

No way for NYR.

I’m a big Toews fan but he’s massively overpaid. Even getting the numbers down to 8M would be tough for any team in the cap world.

Also, we can easily be in the lottery this coming year so I’d be hesitant to part with a potential top 10 pick.

Rangers shouldn't be pursuing Toews until 21-22 season at the earliest. Also probably 2 pieces too many than id be willing to give up.

As a Rangers fan, I would be much more interested in Duncan Keith.

If he wants to be a Ranger, you should have all the leverage and then some.

Intangibles are worth at least 2 firsts alone.

As a fan of a team in the division I think this deal should be made for the Rongos.

From a NYR point of view, I'd take Toews at a reasonable price and at 25% retention. He's no longer a guy you overpay for and feel good about doing it, but he'd be great for the team. Three years left on his deal, so it expires when Lafreniere's ELC expires. Good timing.

Rangers aren't even a playoff team, if Toews wants to win this makes no sense, he'll be retired by the time the Rangers are a true contender in 3 years and when that happens his cap hit will kill the team. Bad fit for both.

There’s a difference between the Rangers two Russian goalies. They aren’t the same.

Shestyorkin is not available in a trade, unless one of the best skaters in the league is coming back.

Georgiyev is available, but we aren’t giving up anywhere near that much for Toews.

As a non-Rags fan I'd say that's a huge overpay for the age of the player and cap hit. I get that Kravtsov wasn't great last year, but I wouldn't give up on him yet. Your 1st could still be pretty high next year.

rangers will definately be a playoff team next season, id go as far as saying they will be battling for the division crown..the makeup of this team is excellent and nowhere to go except up. im a leafs fan and hate the rangers so its my honest opinion,

No team is getting a toews caliber player for anything less then an overpayment, pay up or someone else will..

If Chicago were to ever move him, wouldn't he love to try and win another Stanley Cup? He has that chance with New York playing with Panarin. We all know Gorton is interested in a top end C after it was made clear he inquired about Eichel. With salary retention and the right package going back I think this move won't hurt the Rangers cap wise and our best chance to win a cup will be in the next 3-6 years anyway. Why not have a leader and Stanley Cup winning experience in the locker room? Why not try to go deep and win while you still have players on their entry levels? It would be like a second coming of Messier if you will. That type of player could really push a young team over the edge into becoming winners. I really feel it would be smart of Gorton. This is a move I really wouldn't know the timeframe for, could be this year, next year, or he just decides to ride it out and hit free agency which would make this pointless to talk about. The thing is wouldn't the Blackhawks want to get top value for a guy like him NOW rather than later?

So here's what the package would be,

To CHI:

2021 1st Rd. Pick ----- Self explanatory, Hawks would want a 1st for Toews in any deal

R.Strome ----- Blackhawks get a a guy to play with his brother and lighten the load off Dach until he's ready to take the 1C spot

V.Kravtsov ----- Projected top 6 forward drafted 9thOVR in 2018. Again, self explanatory the Hawks would want a high end prospect in this deal and Kravtsov could end up being a lethal punch with someone like Kubalik

A.Georgiev ----- It is well known CHI has a need between the pipes and after losing Crawford there's potential in someone like Alexander Georgiev. It's pretty simple, Malcom Subban can't be your starter if you want to be a team built to compete. Georgiev would instantly become the starting netminder and he has a ton of upside still in his game.

Libor Hajek/Nils Lundkvist ----- I'm sure Chicago would want something from the crop of defensive prospects the NYR have, Nils being someone who has history with Adam Boqvist and having a much higher floor than Hajek seems to be trending into a #3 PP defensive specialist. Libor Hajek is more a boom or bust, he hasn't quite broken through in NY but a change of scenery in Chicago might help him. Especially going to a locker room with Kubalik in the locker room.

To NYR:

J.Toews [27% salary retention] ----- Rangers get Stanley Cup winning experience in the locker room and an all around leader for a young up and coming Cup contending team in need of a 1-2 punch down the middle. Toews would rekindle some magic with a guy like Panarin and compete for a cup with him.

Although I agree with most NYR fans about keeping our assets and cap room, I am going to play Devil's Advocate for a minute.

The Rangers youth do need a little culture. The Hurricanes series showed that.

Also think Toews would be a great fit for LaF.

Any offer from the Blackhawks though will have to be with 50% rentention. I can see a reality of Toews as a 2C that kills penalties at 5.25 mil.

Fire away Hawk fans.

Toews would get exposed in NY for his overrated and declining defence

Are you insane? Toews is old now and is overpaid. I'm pretty sure NY would have less than 0.00% interest in him. Great player once. Now just a cap burden. Earth to OP. If you have been paying attention, no teams are helping dumb Gm's out of long term, bad contracts. Rangers had one year left on Staal's contract and had to give up a second rounder just to get rid of him. Toews has 4 more years at 10.5. Good luck moving that. Chicago would probably have to give up a first round pick and retain half just to move him and get pretty much nothing back as compensation.
