Mlb trade rumour reports that Raicel Iglesias, a 23 year old RHP from Cuba, defected earlier this month. Wouldn't require any of our International Bonus Pool money and wouldn't require a massive contract to sign as he still needs time in the minor leagues. I'd definitely be open to taking a run at signing him.

NOV. 19: Iglesias has now established residency in Mexico, tweets MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez. The next step in his process will be gaining clearance from the United States Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) and from Major League Baseball to sign with MLB teams.

Your quick. I was just gonna post how there are a lot of cuban defectors in the last day. I think it's 5 guys now that just got out and are waiting.

I did predict JJ to go to the Giants. With Hudson signing there, I don't know, maybe they'll take 2 (or 3 including Lincecum) gambles in their rotation.

The Giants seem to have incredible luck in these situations. I have this burning feeling that last year is going to be an anomoly for JJ and he'll get back to top of rotation pitching for the rest of his career. If he can sign with the Giants he's likely going to turn it around and get paid handsomely afterwards.

Yeah there are five of them. The other one they mostly mentioned was a defensive SS. But with Jose locked up for a while not sure how interested he'd be in coming here unless he wanted to switch to 2B.

It depends if the Giants are open to taking three risks with Lincecum, Hudson and Johnson. I could see him signing with the Padres and having an awesome bounce back season as he would have little to no pressure on him.

The rapper Jay Z not the Bluejays :(
Not that it makes sense 'with the Mets' but first glance it can fool

We know the rapper Jay Z. He's an agent. Anyway, they have to find a way to try and at least create some kind of pretend market however small for Cano. The Mets are an easy attempt at a scare tactic. The Yanks and pretty much everyone else is playing hard ball. He'll be a Yankee because their the only ones likely to give him term. He just won't be one for 30+ per for 10 years. The Yankees have already said they will not wait on his decision and will continue to fill holes and with every hole they fill there will be less money left over for Cano. It's a game of chance that Cano won't win if you consider only making 20 million a season for 10 years losing.

That shortstop with the crazy name looks like he'd need seasoning in the minors before he could jump into the bigs. Defensive specialist with little bat. Needs to be able to hit or he'll max out as a bench option. Sounds a lot like Hech to me. Could be a good cheap gamble if he's not looking for insane money which I doubt he would be.

That's why I wanted to extend the qualifying offer, take a calculated risk for a player that you've already invested a lot of assets in. Besides, each team is getting an extra 25 million plus from the new TV deal, why not spend some of that surplus?

The jays started spending that surplus last year. Thus the drastic increase in payroll. Anyway, I would have been fine bringing him back. I can understand maybe not qualifying him as it's a little rich and he would have taken it for sure. But they apparently haven't even made an offer to him to come back which really has me wondering. Maybe they either 1 don't think he can handle the al east or 2 don't believe he can stay healthy. They'd know better than us. I think with one year off our window of opportunity to win they maybe want more of a sure thing which I can understand

Really small market for Cano at his price. Doesn't that mean he will get quite a bit less than $300M?

Anyone thinking that AA should be looking into both Gavin Floyd (SP) and Corey Hart (OF). They are both on the path to recovery from injury and should be able to play at some point in 2014. Could be cheaper pickups that could surprise.

Sounds like JJ is down to the Giants, Padres, Pirates and possibly a mystery team.

He is begging any team with a giant ballpark to sign him. He will probably suck where ever he goes unless it's the Rays, in which case he becomes a HOF caliber pitcher.

Eh on Floyd. He barely pitched last year and too much of a risk. Corey Hart would be a nice pick-up if they can trade Lind. I don't him to play OF though, we have enough bad defensive players as it is. I am wary of his home/road splits though. He is kind of an average hitter on the road and an elite hitter at home (his splits last 3 years have been huge).

I don't know if we can tie last year's payroll increase to the surplus, necessarily. Beeston and AA have said repeatedly that payroll would go up with attendance, and it did. Regardless, they could afford the QO. Unless, as you said, they have what they feel is a better way to spend it. I just wouldn't want to get bitten in the ass by a healthy and motivated Johnson.

I could see Hart being a good risk to take. He wouldn't command an exorbitant salary, and would settle for one year most likely coming off of a major injury. Maybe if they trade Lind, just in case they need to keep DH open. Hart can play OF and 1B IIRC, so it could be good way to keep Melky and EE fresh by rotating them at DH.

Plus the Man in white would help elevate Harts home numbers even more :sarcasm:
