Lol Dermott is not as good as Gardiner.

LOL Dermott is 22, Jake is 28 (almost 29)
LOL, Dermott had 3 points in this years playoffs. LOL Jake had 2. LOL both were injured when playing , LOL both had similar ice time.
LOL, in 64 games Dermott had 4 goals, LOL Jake had 3 in 62 games.
LOL, Jake had 13 more points, with a considerable amount of PP ice time. Dermott had very little PP ice time.
LOL, Dermott $863k, LOL Jake easily $5 mil+.

LOL, LOL ... :skeptic:

Clearly, it's all bull****. Let's just ignore that teams work to manipulate Babcock into putting him out in pressure situations so they can take advantage of him. After all, he's got great advanced stats!

If you want a true example that advanced stats alone don't give you the full picture, it's Jake Gardiner.

Lmao, you don't deserve a good hockey team.

Is that so?

Yep, he was really good in the AHL, he showed an ability to get the puck through traffic in the short period of time he was up. He's going to be come a fan favorite quickly. Not only can he get the puck to the net he is extremely good at reading plays and getting into good defensive positioning

Shhhh... us adults want to have a mature debate.

Why are you talking about points and goals for a defenseman like they matter? Gardiner is f***ing fantastic. So is Dermott, but he's not close to Jakey yet.

Cute chirp though.

Gardiner is a good player. Certainly he is a solid NHL player, a well-above-average player. That is not the issue here.

The issue here is that he is going to get paid more than he is worth. That makes him, IMO, a below-average player.

This is like when you have a relationship that isn't going anywhere, but you stick with it because that's the easier option.

Jake Gardiner would be a great winter girl if we could ditch him on Valentine's day. Problem is that we would have to commit to at least five more winters if we want one. Let's hope Dubas is able to find a better looking winter girl.

His back injury would lead me to believe he won’t be a durable workhorse for the length of whatever long term deal you give him.

He’s also 25 years old with 2 points in 8 NHL games. We’re far, FAR away from Gardiner’s 50 points a year.

When Dermott gets more ice time on the PP, we will see how well rounded he is.

Until then he’s still a question mark.

Jake is an offensive dman, which is why I'm talking about offence produced by a dman. Thought that was obvious.

If you can find someone to do what $5 to $6 million Jake will do for less than $900k, its pretty simple math. Jake is not $4 to $5 million better value than Dermott.

Jake is not f-ing fantastic, he's scary f-ing inconsistent,

Jake exceed 50 points once, he has constantly been in the low 30-ish point range his entire career, he has been below 31 points 6 out of 8 seasons.

$5 to $6 million is a lot to pay for a d-man for 25 to 30 points, little PK time and who has concussion and back injury history.

I like Gardiner, but if there was ever a player that was in dire need of a change of scenery, it's him.

It's time to move on. We have adequate replacements available from within the organization, and a top 4 RHD should be our number one priority anyway.

Points =/= offense.

Offense = Offense, something that Jake is excellent at driving, and something Dermott has so far lacked.

He's also well above average at preventing other teams from creating offense. Much much better than Rielly at it, much better than Hainsey, much better than Zaitsev, and about equal with Muzzin/Dermott.

Jake is fantastic, and people like you don't deserve what he brings to the team.

If they can get Gardiner back with a 5M cap hit, that's something they gotta do IMO no matter how long the term. We're not getting a better D than him for zero assets in the UFA market this year unless we go handing out 12M to Karlsson. Everything seems to be falling into place as far as the cap is concerned so they could still sign Gardiner AND make a big trade for another RHD involving some combination of Johnsson, Kappy, Kadri. Our window is now; we can't be hoping for the best with a weak D in the playoffs anymore. It's time to load it up; we have the assets to do it.

Jake is a much much better defender than a lot of people give him credit for, but that back injury is scary. We can't sign him long term with that risk, just let him go

When their two best vets are also LD and so are Dermott, Rosen and Sandin why would that even be considered? Just a dumb use of assets and cap space. Do we have to pray for another clubs spending to protect the team from doing something stupid? Wow.

There's no law that says they can't move Gardiner to the right side. There's countless d-men that play their off side and our top pairing for the last few years even had one. Just take away Babcock's options (Hainsey/Zaitsev) and we won't be wasting Gardiner or Dermott on the 3rd pairing left side anymore because he'll have no choice, but to play one of them on the right side
