... Sandin?

Feel bad for Gards, he's had a tough year.

With that comes the opportunity for the club to see how the blue line looks without him though now. Silver lining.

Would love to see either Liljegren or Sandin get a look in place of scrubs like Borgman and Holl. They both possess skills that the rest of our Marlies D simply do not have.

why wouldn’t they divulge that info at the presser?

it isnt exactly season ending news.

I found this strange too. If I were to guess (and this is total speculation on my part,) I think maybe he met with a specialist today or at least team doctors about whether surgery is necessary.

Id imagine surgery would likely take him out of the playoffs.

All these people happy that Gardiner is out are going to really eat their words.

That's 2nd PP unit is gonna really struggle.

I really don't think it will. We've got capable guys between Dermott, Muzzin AND...

AND....

People aren't going to like me suggesting this...

AND...

Nikita Zaitsev.

I actually think Zaitsev is very capable to play the 2nd PP unit role, and it could give him the boost of confidence he may need.

In Zaitsev's rookie season, he scored 12 PP points... 1 less than Gardiner that season, despite being on the 2nd unit, and getting 30 seconds less PP time / game.

Zaitsev is not going to be on the Pp and just an FYI he played with Mathews and Nylander on the pp. Dermott easily over Zaitsev.

Oh, I understand... It doesn't fit your agenda...

The point of my post was that we shouldn't be concerned about missing Gardiner's presence on PP2.

I had a piriformis pull and I can attest to the pain caused by the sciatic nerve. Terrible back spasms. If it is that and it is serious, probably close to 6 weeks for it to fully heal. Who knows if they have some sort of stem cell treatment that can speed healing the muscle.. It's up to the boys to win as many as possible so that he can rest for the playoffs.

what surprises me is that the leafs didn't make moves to get more depth. i've had back issues and they last for ages. i hope he gets better soon

It gets worse as you age. Hip flexors get tight, glutes weaken.
Lunges, squats and deads (ass to the grass) when you are healthy

Ok. Sorry the guy got hurt. But lets all face it. Most here are just being polite when they are secretly cheering. His blunders are far to costly. When anyone else messes up, its usually just a minor issue and is recoverable. When Gards messes up, it costs us games.

I am very excited to see what our youngsters can do. Look at how good Dermott is. Sandin is almost an exact replica of Dermott. Bring him up for awhile or even Lilly for that matter.

Because this an internet chat board, where people are typically very polite.

You couldn't be more wrong. Everyone's entitled to their opinions no matter how ill-informed they are but you could at least have the good grace not to speak for others.

Can you post any numbers showing that Gardiner is no better than a third pairing defenceman ala Polak?
People have posted tons of numbers showing Gardiner to be, dare I say it, elite. But not one of you naysayers have been able to say anything’s more than ohhh he gave the puck away.
Anyways why should we let the facts intrude on an idiotic narrative.

What elite d-man has a whopping 2 goals in 60 games on the year? Burns, Giordano, Doughty, Rielly, Hedman, Josi etc these guys are elite. Gardiner is nowhere near that category and shouldn’t be labelled as such.

Gardiner is an elite skater, that’s about it. He doesn’t have an elite mind for the game. Apparently management seems to agree with me considering they never made it a priority to re-sign him. Cause you know it’s normal to let “elite” d men walk away, except maybe if they aren’t elite to begin with.

This reminds me of those who genuinely believed Phaneuf was a #1 d man, when in reality he was 2nd pairing guy.

There’s a reason teams like the early 00’s Detroit developed players so well. And it’s not because they rushed young guys in and threw them to the wolves

Ok I didn’t realize we were talking about last season. I can play that game too, he’s hit double digits in goals once (2013-2014) as an “elite” defensemen.

Bottom line is if he was that good management would find a way to keep him.

I was thinking give him a game or 2, allow him to see what the big leagues are like, and send him back down

That’s reasonable. It just irritates me when people think ‘trade them all and bring up the young guys’ haha. How’d that work for schenn?
