tyler bertruzzi arbitration numbers are being reported now... for those not farmilar he has the same career games as debrusk... same points... less goals... was a second round pick instead of a first... is a couple years older

clearly debrusk is the better player

bertruzzi is asking 4.25 mill for a 1 year deal... he might not get it, but no chance in hell any agent that isnt incompetent allows debrusk to sign a long term deal for less than this

Detroit is offering tyler 3.15 mill... on a 1 year...

there are comparables for jake that are in the 6 mill range on 6-7 year deals... but this covid enviroment sort of throws everything into a question mark.

my gut says debrusk will end up around 4 on a very short deal {possibly 1 year}
or maybe a back end loaded 2 year deal so that his qualifier is up around 5 on a 2 year deal

players are trying to avoid front loaded deals now with the possibility of a prorated season and a high escrow clawback.

"too soft" yet has more hits and PIM per year than DeBrusk.

the biggest myth going is that DeBrusk has snarl or plays physical. He doesnt. He floats and doesn't engage in board battles. His play style is very similar to Michael Ryder
I’m pretty sure Ryder was still in the AHL at 23.

Bertruzzi is alot older... prob has peaked... never had the same pedigree to begin with... is on a team where he plays 19 mins first line first pp...

What you see is what you got

If we want debrusks future potential we arent looking at 3.5

3.5 on a 1 year is going to upset this player and poison the relationship

Maybe... get creative though
Maybe a 2 year deal at 7 mill?
Go 2 mill year 1
5 mill year 2

Gives him a great qualifer
Avoids some worries about a prorated season
Helps us with a great average caphit

I say either commit and pay this kid or move him... we don't want to ruin a valuable asset with a contract issue

So what's his qualifying offer on the contract you suggest?

Debrusk is 24. Bertuzzi is 25.

More importantly, Bertuzzi was arbitration eligible and Debrusk isn't. So if anything, he's getting less. No one gets paid for 'pedigree'. And Debrusk isn't on PP1???? Did you watch the Bruins last year?

Starts at 5 doesnt it? If we dont pony up he gets early ufa

To me... hes either worth 5 or im fine cutting bait

Im puzzled by your question... you see something off on my logic?

He isn't worth 5 and clearly the Bruins do not think so either because he sits there without a contract. If he wants that, trade him. He's had a decent start to his pro career and has been very good at times, but he is also as inconsistent as hell and when he isnt scoring, he disappears as in he contributes practically nothing to the team effort. That is not a $5m player. If that is the ask, he can go pound sand and maybe some sucker will give us a good deal for the chance to over pay him.

My offer doesnt give him 5 until 2 more years at 3.5 to prove himself

At that time we trade him or walkaway if we dont want to pay

Jake born in 1995, Bertuzzi in 1994.

In any case, you misinterpret the value of the extra year. It works AGAINST Jake because he's younger so he doesn't have arbitration rights.

Why would you back yourself into a corner where you're stuck with the decision to either pay him +5m or walk away? That would be utterly stupid.

Just curious if you are keeping up with the rules.

Any contract signed after July 10 under the Memorandum of Understanding between the league and PA regarding qualifying offers:

Qualifying offer must be 120% of the AAV or 100% of the final year of the contract, whichever is less.

As examples, McAvoy's qualifying offer is $7,300,000 because he was signed before July 10th 2020.

In DeBrusk's case, under your scenario, it would be $4,200,000.

Because most deals are backloaded because of COVID, gone is using the last year as the qualifying offer. It will almost always be AAV when dealing with qualifying offers.

Its not much differnt than signing an ufa

Like hall... getting a year in buffalo... you roll your dice

It helps us now to keep his cap down
And if he aint worth 5 later... we arent losing much

Dont lose sleep over 26 year old forwards that aint worth more. They can be replaced in freeagency or new elc kids

The #5 of PP1 last year rotated between DeBrusk, Coyle, Heinen, Ritchie, Krejci (playoffs)

The non floating for starters. Make is a passenger half the time. Bertuzzi is NOT afraid to play physical. Debrusk avoids confrontations and doesnt even hit to avoid it.

That would be it for me too- Jake goes missing and when he is not scoring goals he is just taking up space on the ice and not every effective space.

I'm going to print and frame this post seeing as it's the first time you've ever agreed with me. Could I get you to sign it as well?

That can't be a first, can it? If so, then I apologize. I could have sworn there were a couple of other times in there
