You keep markstrom and you use Demko who has played insane as a trade piece to get rid of some cap before the expansion draft is my idea
Why not just get rid of the some Cap.....by NOT signing Markstrom and sill have a capable, younger replacement?

And if Demko goes down with an injury, you have Domingue or Dipietro in net. Do you think Canucks can win many games with them?

Demko has 37 NHL games under his belt in total. And you're ready to go all-in on that?

There is a plethora of goaltenders hitting free agency after this season, the smarter move is to sign one to a short term contract to insulate Demko than signing a retirement contract with Markstrom while Demko passes his prime.

and after this game?

I'd be willing to go with Demko now if Markstrom becomes too expensive, or requires term or expansion draft protection. Demko probably doesn't give us as good as goaltending next year as Markstrom, but Ian Clark should be able to develop Demko into a top 15 starting goalie within the next 1-2 years.

We can’t be competitive long term paying a goalie anything over 5mill IMHO

5 is pretty low. Markstrom currently is making 3.75. 1.25 million makes little difference. 17 goalies were at 5 million this year. It's pretty much standard for an established starter at this point. You can get lucky with cheap goaltending but it brings a lot of risk as well.

alex edler, tyler myers, michael ferland. 3 players all signed last year all with NMCs.

None for when it matters though, the expansion draft. Only three goalies league wide currently have expansion draft protection, Price, Bobrovsky and Vasilevsky.

I mentioned this in the past, on the bright side, we're talking about the possibility of moving to Seattle. It's a much easier move and players may think that history can repeat itself and the expansion team can compete right away. Obviously, Markstrom would want to control his fate for at least 2-3 years if he is to re-sign here.

Edler was a no brainer as he's a career Canuck and could have easily squeezed them for more term.
Myers got a 1yr NMC with 4yrs at modified No Trade (must submit a 10 team No Trade list.
Ferland got 2yrs NMC and 2 with the 10 team No Trade Clause.

Man i hate this situation. We did a great job grooming Marky so he could eventually be a stud at 28 29 30 and now we have to likely choose him or Demko because of this BS expansion draft rules.

It will be a sticking point for sure the No Move part of his contract. Seems like whether its recapture or now expansion we get screwed over and the sad part is we have been funding these expansion type teams from our greater share of league revenues for decades. It's just not enough for Gary Bettman and his big boys clubs in America. Want the cake and to stuff their faces with it......FU

I first thought about it about six months ago - how not re-signing Markstrom might be the right move for Vancouver. He'll get at least what, 6 mil? Goalies are dangerous to sign to huge contracts. He's 30 and while your cap management situation is great at the moment, it'll be delicate to handle in a couple of years.

And Demko can easily be any of the hundreds of goalies that never could play a large volume of games in the NHL.

What is your point?

It's a roll of the dice. Certainly, many of us did want to see Demko play well enough that we feel comfortable handing the reigns to him.

We're hoping to make the best informed decision here. If some team offers the Canucks a top 10 pick for Demko that should factor into the decision. If Demko can be extended cheaply for 3-4 years that's a consideration. If Markstrom is willing to take a Valarmov type deal to stay here that's a consideration. If Ian Clarke and the Canucks pro scouts believe that DiPietro is going to be better than Demko that's a consideration.

It's not an easy decision for sure, but I'm on board with handing the reigns to Demko and trying to sign a veteran or make a Jake Allen type trade to insulate him.

Sign Markstrom long term, trade Demko after next season with LE to dump cap. Or expose/trade Markstrom after next season. Either way, Demko is going to allow us to work through the cap crunch.

Good points, but Ferland is the only one that could be affected by the draft. Edler's contract expires next year, making him a risky pick if he's not protected, and Myers' NMC expires after this season, and is a M-NTC. Even Ferland's NMC turns into a M-NTC shortly after the draft.

Not that it diminishes your point at all, NMCs were given out, but as of this moment, non really affect the draft, which is what I think PG was worried about (not to put words in his mouth).

Yep....and sign one of the MANY goalie UFA's that will be on the market and therefore, be reasonably priced, as a backup.

Agree with Dave Ayres. Safest move is to still re-sign Markstrom as long as it's a reasonable price, ride the tandem through next season, and decide in a year which one you want to protect from Seattle.
You think Markstrom would sign without the guarantee of ED protection?

Only matter is that it was confirmed that Myers doesn’t need to be protected for the ED. I would imagine the same goes for Ferland. Since his nmc is only good through the 20-21 season the Canucks could have worded the contract that it expires 24 hours after the end of the NHL season for example.

cause there is no point in having his nmc run through the ED since he drops to a mntc on July 1.
