i'm sure the GM is heavily scouting the top 2 or 3 rounds, doing interviews. after that, is where the scouts come in. finding gems, overlooked players, injured players, targeting areas of need, etc...

our scouts certainly don't go see every prospect, but can garner a decent idea of who will be where (via other rankings?).

yeah, later rounds are a mess, and are basically a crap shoot. all i know is that if i were GM, i would be using my scouts as a resource, not letting them make picks.

anyway, the question i had was about Garf vs Lou. do they approach the draft the same way? is Lou more hands on? i just remember hearing something about Garf letting scouts pick some players, and i don't think i would do that. yeah, it may be a vote of confidence for the scouts but still, i would feel like it's my neckon the line, and i would be very involved, right up until last pick.
GMs only scout the top five or ten prospects for the draft. 99% of the draft is all on the scouts and not on a million years would a GM bother to spend time searching the world for a 3rd round pick. Even late first rounders are all on the scouts as the number of players scouted and available is so huge there is no way the GM can have much of an insight. The Holmstrom pick is such a case. I very much doubt Lou had any idea input whatsoever on that pick but left it all to the scouts, and ultimately the head scout won out.

While not actively scouting players, GM is likely in the loop on who the top targets are in Round 1 because you don’t want a major embarrassment character wise for the franchise.

Defenseman Matias Rajaniemi, Isles 2020 6th round pick, made Finland’s WJC team.

Did Holmstrom make the SWE team? Any other guys playing? I think it’s just the 2?

edit - Holmstrom did make it.

A 6th round pick making Finland's WJC squad in his draft year is pretty good. That's some positive news.
That's great news, especially as a 6th round pick. Happy for Holmstrom. TBH I was prepared for him not to make the squad and then have to suffer to watch McMichael contribute for Team Canada. LGI and our prospects

Good to see both Holmstrom and Rajaniemi make it.

The latter is probably there to add some brawn. Should be very interesting to see if A) he suits up and B) what role he's given & against whom. I can say that Finland otherwise has a lot of puckmovers and skaters on that blueline, so gotta think Rajaniemi is really here with a specific "role". Finland is actually in the "easy" group, as there's Canada, but then "only" Germany, Slovakia, and Switzerland as well.

As for Holmstrom, his inclusion might have a bit more to do with the handful of key players Sweden will be missing out on. Really a shame for the tournament, but ultimately good for him. However, he is one of 14 forwards and all of the other 13 forwards have played at least a half dozen games of SHL hockey this season, with all but two being regulars.

If I had to guess, his AHL experience gives him a clear advantage on North American rinks. That may be his key to gaining any role on that team whatsoever.

Add 2 goals from Merrimack College freshman Alex Jefferies in a pair of blowout losses vs. #17 Northeastern. Both were on the powerplay. MC appears to have a lot of injuries so expecting prime ice time coming up for Jefferies. Next up a pair vs UNH this coming weekend. It is early but Jefferies appears to be off to a fast start leading his team with 3 goals 2 assists in 4 games for the 1-3 Warriors.

Meant to add this yesterday, but how long do you think it will be before NHL uniforms start becoming billboards for sponsors?
