Michael Dal Colle had a month like that in the OHL after getting traded...just remember that. I'll judge Holmstrom after I see him in the NHL. Same for Tomasino.
The problem with MDC is well documented, he has ZERO passion to his game. Unfortunate, he is talented.

i think MDC is ok. doesn't lack talent or passion.

i would guess that he has followed the advice of L&T, and kept it simple, initially, honed his defensive game.

his skating was his weakness, IMO, and that has improved quite a bit. his energy has always been there , but now he seems to be more engaged, less intimidated. more confident. seems to be getting his shot off better, as well.

i think most of the fan-based disappointment, is more about the expectation that came with being a 5th overall.

he is fine in his current role, and my only concern is his lack of experience. but.... as we progress a little further every year, that will grow. ;)

MDC doesnt make the Islanders any better offensively. He's JAG and his trade value is pretty low so most likely he isn't going anywhere. A better replacement for the role he plays would help. At least someone who can skate and provide offense.

MDC is 23 years old and is 6'3" and still filling out. He was highly touted as a junior player and is not going to live up to being a 5th overall pick. But IMO he is steadily improving and could be an effective 3rd line LW who ends up being a .4 to .5 point per game player. He could have a very similar career trajectory to Dan Cleary. Nothing wrong with that.

How do YOU measure his passion?

I see a guy who doesn't skate well enough at this level to get into a good position to use his shot, which is the best tool in his toolbox. His talent is limited as an NHLer.

Dal Colle has had a good 3 or 4 games. Doesn't vindicate his career to date.

While Dal Colle isn't going to live up to his draft status, some players are just late bloomers and we should keep that in mind.

I'm much MUCH more interested to see how he builds on the past series of games and closes out the rest of this season than rehashing what he's done to date.

100%. Plus he’s cheap and he’s been really been upping his energy and has at the very very least committed to learning his defensive game which has shown. Don’t be surprised if he gets like a 3 year deal for like 5 mil. For a little more than a million and half a year he could continue to develop his game and be that late bloomer we’ve become accustomed to seeing. Even if he never is that top 6, having a defensively responsible 3LW who is coachable will do just fine.

Same thing was said about Josh Bailey.....and I completely disagree with your assessment (minus documentation) as I don't think MDC has a passion issue at all. Like another poster said, he's just not a good enough skater to put the hands he has to work. He can pave his way as a grinding third liner at this point. He could be a Raffi Torres minus the lack of judgment and violence.

If you watch Dal Colle in person you’ll realize this isn’t the case.

I think it’s a combination of the 5th overall pick expectations hanging over his head and the role Trotz is asking him to play.

He’s not going to be a top six sniper like he was in juniors. He’s a three zone forward who’s going to put up 30-40 points while playing good defense.

All good teams NEED these types of players, some people just have an issue with them being former 5th overall picks.

I think at some point you just have to move on from his draft position and look at him like any other player.

He's on pace for 20 points/season if we assume he plays every game without injury or being a healthy scratch. That includes 3 points in his last 4 games.

He might have future potential to be a 30-40 point player but I'd say that's optimistic and I wouldn't bet on it.

He's worth keeping on a cheap deal but production like that is easily replaceable at low cost.
