I expected Wally to come up in the conversation but his situation was unique.

He was in a top tier stacked program with talented older players above him in the hierarchy. If he had chosen to stay, I suspect he'd have been successful. Thankfully, he bolted.

Salo and Ish are already past their first year yet have shown no substantial growth in less competitive environments.
Tough to really say they made no substantive growth when you probably have not seen them play. Who knows what there situation is with there team. Do they play ultra defensive systems which negates there numbers produced? That seemed to be the excuse for Wally why his numbers were so bad in college. Also Wally didn’t get much pp time from what I’ve read. Ish plays on the second unit pp for UConn as they favor juniors and seniors mostly in college hockey.

Like nearly everyone else on these boards, I haven't seen any prospects aside from the rare Bridgeport game I go to. Of course that won't stop me from having an opinion.

Two more points before I'm done:

1. Let's not forget that only 44% of second round picks play in the NHL and only 25% play at least 2 seasons
2. More to the point; Do you think any current GM would give up a 2nd round pick for either of them now based on their past performance?

I'm just being realistic. these 2 guys are far from lost causes but they're getting closer to lottery tickets than solid prospects.

You can have an opinion but it’s mostly based on stats. I have watched Ishakov play for the Russian world junior under 18 team. When we made the pick I was excited as I was very impressed what I saw from the kid. Like I said with Wally he’s been better in the Ahl then he was in college hockey considering the competition in the Ahl is much better. Yes more then half of the second round picks are busts. Still way to early to judge Ishakov though. I’m getting worried about Bellows though. I don’t watch Ahl but for a guy who is supposed to be a goal scorer his numbers scoring goals are very troublesome.

I respect your opinion since you've seen Ishakov play but I'm still worried about him. The hit he took early in year 1 also makes me concerned on several levels.

Wally, Sorokin and Dobson have stud potential. Otto, Wilde and Skarek are also solid prospects. The rest look like B level guys at the current time.

More importantly, I can't believe I've got a team in any sport that's crushing it. It's been a long time between drinks of water.

Signed,

Most kids drafted from the 2nd round and on are long shots to be NHL players, but before we write off Ishkakov and Salo lets see what they can do in the AHL. I expect that both will sign after their respective seasons are over in 2020 and next season we will have a far better idea whether or not they can contribute in the NHL.

My sympathies for you being a Jets fan. Wally I think has top 6 potential not sure about stud potential. Dodson I love. Watched him some in junior in the memorial cup. Love the kids game. He’s top 2 tier defenseman potential in my opinion. Sorokin I have no idea about. Until I see him play I’m not going to judge.

UConn/Providence played to a 3-3 tie last night.

Ben Mirageas had 5 shots, no points and was a -1 for the night.
Apparently, Ishakov did not play. There's a rematch tonight in Providence so we'll see if he dresses for that one.
For the prior UConn game on 11/16 he had 1 shot, 0 points and was 0 on the +/-.

Anyone know why Ishakov did not play last night?

Ishakov has some time. No telling what might happen. UCONN is a team that is struggling as they jumped from Division 3 to 1 only 5-6 years ago and it is not necessarily a place where top talent goes in New England.

Lets see if Lou gives him a shot in the minor leagues when he is done at UCONN.

If he stays 4 years at Uconn he could walk away from the Isles and sign anywhere he wants. I want lou to sign him.

As much as I don't know how much playing in juniors will benefit Dobson, he simply isn't getting in enough games right now. I wish they'd do more of a rotation with Mayfield, Dobson, Boychuk.

Lou already said playing in juniors won’t really help his development. Agreed he needs to play more as playing once every 2 weeks is hard for any player especially a rookie.

He’s played so much hockey the last few years and is too good for junior hockey. He’s practicing and learning from Trotz everyday. As far as I’m concerned we’re ahead of schedule for this 19 year old. He’s learning the pro lifestyle and game. Lou and Trotz aren’t Garth Snow. They know how valuable Dobson is to the islanders future and wouldn’t do anything they thought would hurt or jeopardize his future.

All signs point to Dobson being released to Canada for the WJC.
