Regarding Bischoff,
Two-way for first two years, then one-way in the last year.
Must have been to bring down his cap hit, which is lower this time around.

I find it hilarious how hard Oiler fans try and denigrate Dobson and hype up Bouchard in the Dobson vs. Bouchard poll thread on the main board. The hyperbole both ways is so extreme that it's highly entertaining.

They can't wait for the Reinhart Bouchard first pairing. Oh wait! Never mind!

I was a huge fan of Bouchard but he’s not close to Dobson. I thought Bouchard would improve defensively and he might but I don’t see him being great defensively. He’s a mess against kids his own age. Offensively he’s gifted but I think Dobson is right there. People don’t give Dobson the enough credit for his offensive game and skills. Dobson has offensive skills AND is an absolute anchor on defense. Give me Dobson every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Bouchard reminds me of Shattenkirk. A liability on defense so he'll be a fringe top-4 and a PP specialist.

I wanted nothing to do with Bouchard on draft day and I think everyone knows how I felt and still feel about Dobson. Thankfully Edmonton doing Edmonton things totally worked out for us.

Shattenkirk is a good comparison for him. He’s not our prospect so I don’t care as much but it’s a bit disappointing watching him play. He just doesn’t play well in his own end. I think he was better in his D-1 than he was in his draft year TBH.

Dobson has a grasp on how to play and where to be. He combined that with him coming to one of the best defensive coaches in Trotz and it bodes really well.

The whole Dobson has limited offensive upside is a myth. He has the ability to create separation due to his plus mobility, he can get his shot off as a result. It's a good sign that Dobson has put up solid goal totals even when he was on a terrible Titan team. His offense comes from playing within the flow, he doesn't play like a dumbass to generate offense... that's kind of the knock on Bouchard and Wilde unfortunately.

Bouchard is not only bad defensively, he looks completely apathetic about playing in his own zone. He seems to be waiting to get the puck and then he comes alive to go on the offensive. He's a great passer, but he better be because skating the puck out isn't his forte. People seem to rave about his shot, but it's no Pulock bomb.

I never understood why anyone questioned Dobson’s offensive talents or how it will transition. I see a guy who excels with the puck in his own end. Watching him in the WJC and playoffs I love when he gets a head of steam and rushes the puck and drives to the net. He’s always getting shots through and on net and he’s terrific at finding the open man. The thing about him that people sometimes forget is he’s playing 30+ min and he’s also responsible for shutting down the opposing teams best forwards. All the energy it takes to play defense the way he does for the amount of TOI he does and your point totals might not be what they could be. I’m not worried about him at all. He’s going to be our best player one day imo and the captain after Lee moves on or retires.

A lot of high end d-men play huge minutes in the CHL, Dobson doesn't cheat and plays an honest game in all 3 zones. That's what separates him from the others, he is effective all over the ice and busts the whole "it's ok because he plays 30 minutes" excuse for why other d-men's game slip in their own zone or in the offensive zone (re: Reinbust).

The Athletic had a top-50 prospect ranking.

Bouchard was in the top 5 and Dobson wasn’t in the top 20

The only defensive prospect I could see being ranked higher than Dobson is Byram. That’s about it. For Dobson to not be in the top10 of a prospects list is laughable, not top20 is a complete joke. The guy loses credibility with that one.

Fox was 10th.

This is why I don't pay for the Athletic.
I just signed up :)

I think Arthur is worth it, plus MMA writing over there is solid. Couldn't name a writer tbh but enjoy the selection. In hockey world though Justin Bourne is great as well and this one lady I forgot her name that also covers the Isles. Not into many other writers though.

That is insane. Are there some qualifiers? Like who is expected to make an impact this season - and maybe the Isles depth on defense means Dobson doesn't have a spot to play this year? Who wrote the article? Wow. Just wow.

At the end of the day, these lists don't mean a damn thing. Remember Corey Pronman overrating various NYI prospects like Kirill Kabanov who scored 3 goals in 49 games last year in Germany. These guys like what they like, which is why scouting departments that can get a range of opinions on *top* picks (probably not possible on lower-round picks) are better for it.

We'll start to know in the next two or three years how these rankings pan out, by which time he will have written 20 more articles just like it and these particular ones will have been long forgotten.
