I think it was more about getting Hildeby some playing time. Samsonov will be the backup, but will be put on waivers again or whatever they can do, and Hildeby will be brought back up and will play in the 2nd game of the b2b against Detroit on Sunday.

My thoughts exactly!

Samsonov doesn't need to go through waivers, unless he is on the roster for 10 games, or 30 days... so he can be sent back down again after Saturday's game, and Hildeby can be brought back up.

If that were the case why not just bring someone else up to sit on the bench?

If he does come back to play for the Leafs, it won't be anytime soon. This was to get Hildeby some practice and games so he would be ready to come back up and play against Detroit on Sunday.
I'm fine with anything that demonstrates Keefe having confidence in two goalies until Woll's return.

Ideally the backup won't play... but Petruzelli is an 0.875 AHL goalie right now.... so... if you actually have to get the backup to play... Samsonov has been better.... Which is, ouch...

Right, a healthy Samsonov would be considered better but if he's not ready, he's not ready.
If they're counting on the backup not playing anyway, who's sitting there doesn't matter.

Are people sure this recall doesn't have more to do with Hildeby getting games and less about Samsonov being ready to play.
Yes, pretty sure.

It's hard to imagine they aren't deferring to the specialists.

I'm not. We'll see if he gets in games right away (within 4 or 5 games). If Samsonov sits as well then I guess he wasn't ready yet.
He may not get in right away, Jones is playing well. Why bring him up if not ready? Sitting doesn't automatically mean he isn't ready.
If it was just to get Hildeby to play they could have sent him back tomorrow to play.

Back to back this weekend. We can assume Hildeby sat the last one because they felt he wasn't ready. The same can be assumed for this weekend about Samsonov if he doesn't play.

Not sure that's the correct assumption. Jones has played because he's on a roll.
Why would they bring a player back if he isn't fit to play? That makes no sense.

What is the obsession with "protecting Hildeby?" Don't these guys know that goalies are voodoo, you got guys like Matt Murray who literally peak in their early 20s and is done by 30 and then you have guys like Thomas who take forever to get to the league and peak in their early to mid 30s. There's no rhyme or reason to any of it.

In any case, there's no pressure on him and he cannot be worse than Samsonov, even 1 goal from the red line and 2 soft ones is better than Samsonov's 5+ every game.

For the development of the prospect. Evaluation of said player in practices. Teams have done this before.

I hope Samsonov regains his form, mainly because Hildeby needs all the playing time he can get for his development.

But Samsonov being recalled doesn't signify that he is ready to get back into games yet. Only putting him into games signifies it.

Goalies on hot streaks have been sat on b2b before. They aren't sat when there is a lack of confidence in the back-up. So Saturday or Sunday we should know if the coach has confidence in Samsonov.

Why send Hildeby back yesterday and not tomorrow?

It makes zero sense to bring back a player who isn't ready to play, nothing logical about that.

Coach mad it clear in his presser this is more about Hildeby and less about Sammy.
Let Hildy play for the Marlies and bring him back and play him against Detroit.
Kid hasn't had game action in what two weeks?
Seems clear SK is done with Sammy just by the way he adresses questions about him

Lost
I think they don't want Samsonov to get lit up by an AHL team and have him lose any confidence that he still has. Jack Cambell was sent to the minors with the Oilers and got killed by AHL teams and has never been back and I think that this is what the Leafs are trying to prevent.

Like Campbell, Samsonov is absolutely toast and not an NHL caliber goaltender in 2024.

Samsonov has no more confidence left to lose, he would be lit up playing peewee house at this point.

Keefe specifically said:

"It's equally if not more about Dennis Hildeby, quite honestly....He will practice with the Marlies, and then get a game in on friday with the Marlies. So that's what's it's really about."
Exactly, Samsonov being healthy wouldn't need to be stated, that would be a given.

Don't see this project tossing more than two points out the window at the worst. He's been a serviceable goalie for most of his career and the upside on that is either we have an extra option in net or he becomes a moveable asset and we have an extra 2.5M to work the deadline in prep for the playoffs.

It's a risk reward gamble that's not too bad and the folks in charge have inside intel. We did the mid season mental health reset with Campbell two years back and that same outcome would put us in a much better position than having dead cap for the season.

But what did this actually accomplish? Why should we expect any different results. We demoted Samsonov to the Marlies where he didn’t even play a game and now he’s back.

Keefe specifically said:

This I understand. Samsonov better not play. Not even remotely interested in indulging him gifting away 1-2 points while we are closing on the division leaders. Win our 2 in hand and we’re 1 back of Florida and 3 back of Boston
